Very generous plates of Mexican food. I like their posole and chile rellenos, also, best margarita in town (lilikoi, prickly pear & other options). They make them just the way I do: strong, sour, with a li hing mui rim! and the price cannot be beat

They know how to make eggs Benedict! I've only had brunch there, but it's a favorite out of the way spot, located right next to the downtown farmer's market

Best Thai food in town, very fresh, always delicious. Order Medium spicy for the full experience. My favorites are the Tom Ka (coco soup) and the Larb Gai (minced chicken salad-ask for extra lettuce), generous portions, enough to share. My husband likes their Massaman curry, very peanutty

Check in at the visitors center, ask all the questions you want, they have great interpreters from all over the world. Hiking trails (Kilauea Iki is a good one, not too long), also be sure to see Jaggar Museum at the roads' end, it's free and has good exhibits and you can often catch a ranger giving a talk. Great nighttime viewing of the lava lake in Halemaumau crater

wonderful snorkeling, swimming, black sand beach with great views of Hilo and Hamakua coast. The best Oceanarium on this side of the island, take a picnic, find some shade, spend a few hours, respect the lifeguard signs, but if it's calm you can discover hidden gems. Honu (sea turtles) swim here

Off the beaten path, but still well known, though rarely crowded. These tidepools are great for swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking. No bathrooms or showers like the beach parks all over the state, but you will love the underwater views. It's like swimming in an aquarium, huge tropical fish. You can find a secluded spot if you're willing to walk a bit (on the right hand side of the pools, past the tiny trees)
