Food & Coffee Shops

Our favorites are mostly downtown on Cookevilles Historic Westside. So many great locally owned unique places. Cookeville is growing so fast, there is always something new to try. Take highway 70 back over the interstate north/west 5 miles, a few minutes, fork right to Broad Street and your there!
Best bbq !! We LOVE It!! Aslo great atmosphere in the heart of downtown, nice to walk around as well. Very friendly too. You can reserve online, ask for a window seat! You can sit outside here as well.

This is THE best Indian food. Full of great flavors, bright modern dining room. There is a mint cilantro broth soup that is so unusual and delicious! Located on Jefferson Ave, the main street about 1/3 mile off the exit on the left.

Its 30 minutes east in Crossville, but SO GOOD!! Coffee is wonderful, atmosphere is so 'HGTV' . Every inch is thoughtfully decorated. Very stylish, a feast for the eyes and taste buds. Check the website for live music. Great pannini's and cheesecake too! Very comfortable, and kinda romantic too. Local artists works are displayed. There is even a guitar you can play! Also in Crossville is a good shopping outlet and If you are a knitter or quilter, there are two excellent fabric and yarn shops. Crossville also is home to FDR's New Deal Homesteading project during the Great Depression. 252 of the most adorable "subsistance" homes made by the WPA to help folks thru employment. The laborers were paid $25 a month. One of those widows was in my Sunday school class before she passed away. She said the wives were sent $20, the worker got $5 a month and they were grateful for it!! You will know when you see one of the flagstone homes .

Pub, good food, nice outdoor area, but might be smoking outside. Great Reuben. Rich and flavorful, tons of calories I'm sure. Only thing we didn't like is the noise level. No soft surfaces so a bit hard to hear eachother. Food was great though and charming pub atmosphere.

Taiko Sushi on the West side is a cozy place we like and go back to often. I'm not a sushi expert, but I have liked everything so far. Had the North Pole sushi last time...YUMMY! Food was SUPERB!! Very well thought out flavorful dishes. My only gripe was, at least where we were seated, it was so noisy, we could barely hear each other. Tables were too close together. Prices were above average. Decor was very nice. Just need to get a hearing aide or go when its not busy I guess!

Parks & Nature

Secret little gem, 15 minute walk from our house or less if you drive. As you come down the hill, just before the bridge, there is a short trail, (1/3 mile?) from the edge of the boat ramp parking lot back to a neat waterfall. Great place to take some pictures. You can walk up and over to the left, feel for the cold air on your ankles...look down at the big rocks, see the cave opening very low to the ground. My sons climbed in (I wouldn't)! It opens into a huge underground room with a stream...very neat. Not alot of people know about it. Now you do.

Walk off your dinner, nice path around the fountain. Well lit, outdoor amphitheater adjacent, lots of fun free summer concerts. At Christmas time, the fountain is turned into a huge tree with synchronized music and lights that play at the top of the hour from about sunset to 9 or 10, its so much fun, kids (and big kids) love it and dance all around.

If you love water falls, this place is a must. Some of the water is close enough to the parking lot that most people can walk to it. I would say its the most accessible with alot of level shady paths. Good areas to bring a picnic. Not very far from us. Check with the park website, one of the overlooks was or is under construction.

CHECK WEBSITE First! you must purchase a permit on their website, $6. Permits are limited. This falls is probably one of the most awesome in the area. It can also be quite crowded, go early. I won't lie, the hike is a challenge. There is an overlook, but if you want to walk down to the water, its a two mile downhill rocky path, and once you get down, to the water, you will have to walk in the water to get to it. If you don't mind getting wet, this is stunning. I'd go in the warm weather. Bring food and water in a small back pack as you will need two hands in some areas to get to the falls. There is a General Store across the street where you can get drinks, ice cream and some gear. Its about 45 minutes from us.

There are several stunning waterfalls here, many very walkable. In the summer a refreshing 'water hole' area great to swim in, just bring some water shoes. It can be a tad slippery. You can't beat a $9 pontoon boat tour, check their website. Also, Sept Mountaineer Folk Festival. Rope Bridge, zip lines, hiking and biking to name a few.

I won't lie, I have not YET seen this, its on my professional research list. I can tell you it is not far, 18 minute drive and also located close to Burgess Falls State Park. Google has some fabulous photos of it. I copied the following from the official web site. "The trail is 5.5 miles roundtrip from the parking area to Window Cliffs. Allow two and half to 3 hours to complete the hike. A roundtrip hike requires 18 creek crossings which can be challenging or impassable during high water as there are no bridges but only cables and rock crossings. You will get wet when hiking this trail. Hiking boots are recommended for hiking the trail, having an extra pair of water shoes or tennis shoes is suggested for stream crossings. The trail is considered difficult to strenuous. Due to the numerous stream crossings with sometimes swift water and the potentially dangerous cliff tops, pets are not permitted within the natural area."

This place is just 11 miles from us. I would say I like it even more than some of the falls! The city of Monterrey just got the land to the overlook, so now the public can see it without trespassing. NEED TO KNOW: The trail is hard to find unless you know this. When you get to the culdesac ending of Bee Rock Road, you will see a large grey building. Walk just to the right of it, go BEHIND it and you will see the trail-head, you can't see it from the street. Do NOT take the more obvious trail you will see from the culdesac, it goes no where. Bee Rock lives up to its stunning pics on the internet. Take some snacks, binoculars and camera. The path is about 10 minutes, mostly very walk-able, a few small rocks to step over, slight incline near the end. be extra careful if you have children with you, there are No guard rails. Its probably the best thing in Monterrey besides the Mennonite General Store if you want to stock up on spices, I go a couple times a year for dry goods and to the greenhouse.

Also one our to do list. 38 miles south, about a 55 min drive. Here is a cut and paste from the web site. This natural area, located in White County, is the home of 110’ Virgin Falls. An underground stream emerges from a cave and then plummets 110’ over the side of a cliff before disappearing again into another cave at the bottom of the sink. Strenuous 5-8 HOUR hike. Before you visit, please read up on the rules and the hike. One of the main rules is that the caves are closed. This is to protect the resident bats from white nose syndrome. The hike into the falls is around nine miles round trip and is a strenuous route. Make sure to start this trek early enough to give yourself time to get out and back before dark.

Wow, what a great place to discover. You can drive so close to the waterfall, just a short hike, a bit rocky. We went to downtown Sparta for brunch, (The Coffee Collective!!) than about 20 minutes to the falls. You can walk right up to the falls. If it was summer, I'd of gone in. The cave is wide open, you can explore some. I'm not super daring, so caves are up to you. There were two caves we saw, one had a sign that bats are hibernating certain time of the year so they ask you not go in to that one. We enjoyed getting so close to the water and the peaceful drive there and back. No public restroom, but it was remote enough to hide behind a big tree. I'll go again.

Its a 40 minute drive, but if you like quaint country history, there is Suttons General Store that doubles as a restaurant, eat at a big table family style with others...than everyone goes to the big room for a blue grass show which is broadcast live on the radio.
