Long established Chinese take-away restaurant. The food is good, it's conveniently located at the end of the road, and you can phone through and have the food delivered ... and we're very good friends with the family who run it.

In my view, the best Pie and Mash I've tasted outside south London. They also serve stewed eels.

Harbour Lights restaurant has a lovely ambiance, with beautiful views of the backwaters and the boats in the marina. Excellent food, with a very good value carvery option. They also serve pizza in the evening. It’s a bit hard to find first time: drive down Walton Road, the B1034, towards Walton; turn off onto Coles Lane, and follow this lane until you come to a raised barrier; Harbour lights is down the next left.

Flatford lies in the heart of the beautiful Dedham Vale. This charming hamlet was the inspiration for some of John Constable's most famous pictures, for example, the Hay Wain or Boatbuilding near Flatford Mill among many others. Wandering beside the River Stour or looking at Flatford Mill and Willy Lott's House you can feel as if you are actually walking through one of his paintings. Take a look at the brand new exhibition about Constable at Flatford and enjoy the riverside tearoom. Exhibitions by contemporary artists are held in the Boat House Gallery.

Set by the River Stour, Dedham is in the heart of Constable Country. It was here that Britain's greatest landscape artist John Constable went to school. The attractive high street is lined with Georgian-fronted houses, old inns and a large art and crafts centre. Dedham is frequently rated as containing some of England's most beautiful Lowland landscapes, particularly the Water Meadows of the River Stour, forming the boundary between the counties of Essex and Suffolk. Of longer influence in Dedham was horse painter, Sir Alfred Munnings who became President of the Royal Academy. His house in Dedham, Castle House, now contains a gallery of his work, and his studio.

Drinks & Nightlife

Despite its coastal location, Frinton-on-Sea was long known as a ‘dry’ town - remarkable for its distinct lack of a pub. The Lock & Barrel changed all that though, bringing brilliant ales and proper pub food to the town’s much-loved Connaught Avenue. Set among the independent shops and boutiques of "the Bond Street of the East Coast", the pub is the perfect place to recharge your batteries after a hard day's shopping - and a great spot for refreshment after a day at the beach. With a wonderful open fire to warm you up on a cold winter's night, and two pleasant courtyard areas for when the seaside sun shines, The Lock & Barrel is a popular pub all year round.

16th century pub, supposedly haunted, and I can confirm that when I worked there as a barman decades ago I heard the noise of people walking around upstairs when nobody was in, but I acknowledge the building is over 400 years old. Good beer, great food, nice beer garden. Just watch out for ghosts.

Frinton, with its wide sandy beach, has gone out of its way to remain as uncommercialised as possible and maintain its reputation as a quiet family resort. Somewhat in contrast to neighbouring Clacton or Walton has an air of reserved gentility and has been rewarded for its outstanding cleanliness with a Blue Flag award. The gently shelving beach is divided up by a series of timber groynes. Frinton's sand is of the type that is perfect for making sandcastles - nice and firm. This means it is also ideal for running around on and beach games, further asserting its credentials as a fine family beach. To the rear of the beach is an extensive promenade, much of which is lined with colourful, ol
