Great South of the Border quality cuisine. $$ MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View: Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking Whether they’re digging into a refreshing ensalada de nopales or sharing a platter of blue-corn tacos stuffed with spicy-smoky marinated fish, local couples and families with kids in tow adore this sustainable Mexican dining operation. Sister to Cal-cuisine icon Nopa, Nopalito is a thriving and equally beloved culinary favorite. The small, cheerful space with reclaimed wood and bright green accents doesn’t take reservations; call ahead to get on the list, or try takeout. Once seated, friendly servers will guide the way with house-made horchata for the kids and an extensive tequila selection for grown-ups. Both groups will certainly agree on a sweet finish: the excellent vanilla bean flan topped with orange caramel and orange supremes is unbeatable.

Highly rated Italian restaurant. $$$ MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View: Che fico (“what a fig”) is Italian slang for “How cool!”, an apt description of this airy, stylish space, where tables are still a hot commodity all week long. Those who don’t manage to snag a reservation may find a perch at the bar, where an impressive array of compelling cocktails features unique flavorings like green walnut or basil eau de vie. The vibe is chic, but the cooking leans rustic; start with house-made salumi or mozzarella, then proceed to hearty pastas like saffron spaghetti with 'nduja, or pizzas with puffy, blistered crusts (try the pineapple, red onion and fermented chili number). A wood-fired oven features heavily, from vegetables like charred broccolini with pecorino sardo and Calabrian chili, to whole-roasted branzino.

Upscale Japanese Sushi $$$$ From Michelin Guide: The word "jūni” is Japanese for “twelve,” which also happens to be the number of seats available in this petite, omakase-only spot, housed just off the busy Divisadero corridor. They’re a young, lively crew, often led by Chef/owner Geoffrey Lee, and they’ve designed this space with a crowd of similarly young, moneyed professionals in mind.

$$$$ MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View: The city has its share of intimate omakase counters, but few offer quite as much cozy charm as this six-seat gem in the Lower Haight. Walking through the unmarked door on Divisadero puts diners in the experienced hands of Chef Ken Ngai, a native of Hong Kong who mastered his craft at respected sushi spots here in the Bay Area. The menu’s approach straddles tradition and creativity, spanning a moderate selection of skillfully prepared nigiri, featuring unconventional toppings like cured egg yolk and preserved plum. Apart from the sushi, a variety of small composed plates shine especially bright, as in a silky chawanmushi luxuriously flavored with crab and dried scallop, or an intriguingly sweet-savory dish of poached ikura in a refreshing ume broth.

Outside the neighborhood but worth a visit. $$ MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View: Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking Landlubbers seeking a taste of the sea can be found pulling up a stool at this Castro institution, where waves of waiting diners spill out the doors. This tiny, minimally adorned space filled with old-fashioned charm is better for twosomes than groups. While the menu may be petite, it’s full of fresh fare like a light and flavorful Dungeness crab “burger” on a sesame bun; Caesar salad combining sweet prawns and tangy anchovy dressing; or a cup of creamy Boston clam chowder loaded with clams and potatoes. As the name portends, raw oysters are a specialty—so briny that the accompanying mignonette may not be necessary. And of course, the cioppino is unmissable, as this signature item turns sublime when paired with delicious and buttery garlic bread.
