Drinks & Nightlife

Possibly the best party night of the week, frequented by party people of all ages young and a lot less young, but not for children. It attracts late night revellers from Colombo the capital city. Friday is their party night (free entry) with music, live drumming band, open air dance floor & bar. Arrive late & leave well after midnight (we have been there until sunrise!). Located road side on the main beach Galle Road. Expect crowds in high season, fire eaters, laser lights. Kebab stall & a table tennis area if you need a short break from dancing & drinking. Friendly atmosphere with tourists happy to chat and get to know one another.

Stylish beach bar day and night. A lovely beach spot and great for sunset cocktails. Cool chilled out vibe and staff! Good music and a it's own party night, reminiscent of Ibiza in its infancy.

A quieter beach bar that plays relaxing music. Nice daytime and early evenings, but has started charging for sun beds.

The oldest beach bar in Hikkaduwa, catering to the inner Hippy in us all! It always plays great music, and is frequented year on year by an eclectic group of traveling dreamers, musicians and "philosophers" from all walks of life and different part of the world. Graffiti artwork painted walls, and a character building toilet - get loo roll from behind the bar! Busy from sunset until around midnight, or the last customer drinks up. Occasional live bands or someone painting a poem on the wall.

Parks & Nature

Amazing snorkeling get Kosala the Tuk Tuk Driver to take you. There's a mask & snorkel to borrow at the villa. Not the best looking beach, but you’ve only to put your face in the water to see many species of tropical fish feeding off the coral roped off after the glass bottom boats. Look for groups of people in the sea. Swimming good at that beach & to the left (looking out to sea), outside Hikka Tranz Hotel. Please don’t leave bags unattended on that beach. There's no sun beds, so ask Chaminda for some beach towels out the office/store room. Once you’ve had enough of the fish, I highly recommend moving to the far more lovely beaches at the south end of Hikkaduwa closer to Villa Sapphire.

Sea Turtles on the beach outside the hotel - a wonderful experience to paddle in the shallow sea with them as they come ashore to feed. Swimming also good at that beach. On the beach you will see a sea wall & just over it, is where turtles can been seen daily. Look for people in the sea with their iPhones photographing them! Please don’t leave bags unattended on that beach. There are no sun beds, so please ask Chaminda for some beach towels. For sunbathing, I recommend moving to the far more lovely beaches at the south end of Hikkaduwa nearer to the villa. You might see turtles laying their eggs, or them hatching anywhere on the beach around that area at night - pure joy!

A great half day sightseeing trip is a boat safari on Maduganga Lake. Setting off from Balapitiya, easily reached by tuk tuk. Take some refreshments with you, & something to cover up from the sun. There is a beautiful Buddhist temple to visit, so include a something to cover arms & legs (sarongs for Guests to borrow at the villa). The trip includes venturing onto a small island to talk to the locals about the wonders of cinnamon, see how cinnamon is prepared, & palm frond weaving. Monitor Lizards & bird spotting. You could also stop off at the Ariyapala mask Museum & shop, just north of Ambalangoda. Here you can buy the finest quality hand carved traditional Sri Lankan masks.

Sightseeing

25 minutes by Tuk Tuk, is the Galle Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sri Lanka’s most perfectly preserved colonial townscape, with sedate streets of Dutch-era villas enclosed by a chain of imposing ramparts. The Fort is a historical, archaeological & architectural heritage monument. As you come into the town of Galle, turn right & drive past the International Cricket Stadium. Pass through the Fort gates, where you will be transported back to the Dutch colonial era. First built by the Portugese in 1558, then fortified by the Dutch in the 17th Centuary. The ramparts and very thick walls were designed to protect the Dutch interests. Explore it's labyrinth of historic streets museums. Stylish

Essentials

Sandagiri is the one stop shop for everything tourists might need from a supermarket & next door is its Wine Shop also selling beer & spirits. There is an ATM within their parking area at the front of the shop. Local shops also sell the full range of items that everyone might need at less touristy prices, but not all under one roof. The following places probably are not marked on Google maps! but for fresh fish head to the roadside stalls by the harbour at Dodanduwa south of Hikkaduwa. For meat & poultry - the Farm Shop, the fruit and vegetable market in Hikkaduwa. Bakery close to the villa for crusty white bread, & artisan bread from Lavanga Hotel bakery. Laundry facilities at the villa.
