Guidebook for Sedona

Food Scene
One of four upscale restaurants owned by local food diva, Lisa Dahl. Outstanding ambiance and fine-dining experience with an Italian flair. This little slice of italy is very popular on the weekends, so definitely call for a reservation. They offer homemade fresh pasta dishes, vegetarian, organic and seafood selections. The restaurant sells Lisa’s cook book, the Elixir of Life which is outstanding. You won’t be disappointed.

A great place for home-made breakfasts, pastries, and breads. Their signature, fresh chocolate croissants have a cult following.... be there before 8am, or the croissants will be gone! They serve Starbucks coffee too.

Open 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. An historic trading post converted to a restaurant. Order inside, then retreat to the outdoor garden to dine. Towering sycamore trees provide much needed cooling shade for hot Sedona afternoons. Breakfast and lunch fare with a twist. Try the toasted melted brie, peppered bacon, and fig sandwich or the massaged kale and squash salad with maple mustard dressing.

The latest of Lisa Dahl’s culinary gifts, this is an amazing new upscale restaurant. People swear this restaurant has the best steak they have ever eaten in their life! As you turn into the restaurant driveway, the path to the restaurant is flanked with vortex torch lighting. The front door is a work of art and the bar is cozy and inviting. You will definitely need a reservation, and ask for JB. Tell him that the “Carolina Girls” sent you. The wine list is the best in Sedona and the service is impeccable.

Located inside Tlaquepaque Village, this restaurant provides craft beers and great food. There is terrace seating or indoor seating. I like the wood-fired flat bread pizzas, tower of French fries with 3 sauces, all of their salads are good. And the salmon is delicious....the best salmon I’ve had in such a land-locked place!

Another venture by restauranteur Lisa Dahl. They have an amazing Caesar salad that is meant for two, but I had no problem eating it all myself! The chicken breast is hit or miss...it can be great one day and dry the next. Pizza’s are delicious! It is a great place to take the family...plus you can get quality gelato or cannoli’s for dessert!

Family-owned Chinese restaurant and take out in the Village of Oak Creek. My favorite “go-to” restaurant when I need something quick or I don’t feel like cooking. I order the sizzling rice soup for two and their lettuce wraps...ask for extra lettuce though. Entrees and woked veggies are all great. The food quality is very good!

Definitely one of Sedona’s best kept secrets. The café is tucked among shade trees and art galleries in the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. This is a great place to go for an al fresco lunch. I love their portabella and goat cheese sandwich or their turkey salad croissant. Save room for dessert because they have expanded their menu to include specialty coffees and a wide selection of desserts (like white chocolate raspberry mousse cake, flan, and warm bread pudding with caramel....yummo!) Don’t miss the Tlaquepaque Community Farmers Market (very early mornings on Fridays in the summer), before heading to the Secret Garden café for breakfast.

A favorite breakfast and lunch place for tourist and locals alike. Where else can you choose from 101 different omelets? Very reasonably priced. Try the #51 chili con carne and cheddar omelet or the # 49 veggie omelet, hold the yolk. Sip your morning coffee, in their outdoor patio with cascading fountain.

Great steak house with wide variety of appetizers, salads and entrees. My favorites are the wedge salad, fish tacos and the grilled artichoke salmon with garlic-cheddar mashed potatoes. The restaurant used to be a movie theater, which was shut down after a fire in 1930s. You can still see the smoky streaks on the walls today.

Bohemian coffee house favored by local artist and authors, named as a tribute to the Proprietor’s grandmother (I think). It’s relaxing atmosphere provides the perfect place to unwind on the weekend. Stop by on Saturday or Sunday afternoon for live music. Favorites are the pumpkin spice chai latte and frozen mango smoothie.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Fabulous international fusion cuisine! Great for lunch or early dinner. Nested near local vineyards, it is “the” place to go for creekside dining. Versatile menu with signature dishes such as the roasted golden beet and pecan salad, seasoned ribeye with mushroom shallot sauce, local trout almondine, and the barbeque baby back ribs in cabernet sauce. Local wines are featured. Generally, not busy during the week, but you should make a reservation for weekend nights. Looks can be deceiving...looks like a dive from the outside, but the food is really, really good!

The Cathedral and Templeton Trailhead is behind the house off Back O’ Beyond Road. The city of Sedona requires that you have a Red Rock Parking Pass to be able to park at the trailheads. You can purchase a parking pass for the week for about $15 at the Sedona Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, located at 331 Forest Road, Sedona AZ. It is worthwhile to stop at the Visitor Center because you will also find literature and coupons about things to do.

Devil’s Bridge stands as one of the great geologic formations in the Sedona Red Rock County. This hike rates in one of the top 5 “must do” trails in Sedona. To make the most of this adventure we like to hike the 1.2 miles via Chuck Wagon Trail to the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead. In the past, many would attempt the drive up FR 152 (Vultee Arch Road). This road is notoriously punishing on cars and is not recommended. Instead, enjoy the winding 1.2 mile hike on Chuck Wagon through an open low growth forest and get a stunning view of Devil's Bridge!

Soldiers Pass Trail is a moderate trail that offers a back country feel yet is almost located in the middle of town. Sandwiched between Brins Ridge and Capitol Butte (a.k.a. Thunder Mountain), this trail offers everything you would expect from a great trail. The trail rolls through a number of arroyos, past the area’s largest sinkhole (Devils Kitchen), along the “Seven Sacred Pools,” then up 509 feet atop Brins Mesa. The highlight of the trail is the impressive sinkhole.

Boynton Canyon Trail is a stunning hike through a picturesque canyon that moves you through a varied landscape. Make no mistake the real gem of this trail is found in the final 1/3 of the hike as you enter a high forest with large pines, oaks and even alligator junipers. The first 2/3 of the trail are really just a “means to the end” as you make your way through low growth scrub forest and along the east side of Enchantment Resort. As you hike this trail you will notice a stark contrast in temperatures as you leave the low growth, open red rocks in the first 2/3 and enter “the forest” and rise in elevation. The trail ends in grand fashion as it rises up and crescendos onto a quasi-plateau ab

Courthouse Butte Loop Trail is a great moderate hike for the whole family. While many come to “play” on Bell Rock, they are truly missing the best part of the area. The real gem of this area is in doing the entire loop. You will have a choice on the southern side of Courthouse of doing the Courthouse Loop or taking the Big Park Loop (preferred). As you loop around the eastern and northern side of this great butte, you will unlock the most scenic, tranquil and up close views of the trail.

Fay Canyon is a great trail for the whole family. Fay Canyon is relatively easy, starting with flat views of open spaces which get better and better the further you make your way back into this box canyon. The high red rock cliff walls coupled with the large oak and juniper trees make this a great trail year-round. There are ancient Indian ruins along the cliffs. Look for the tell-tale smoke streaks on the cliffs and scramble up the steep rock trail to experience ancient structures and petroglyphs.
