Getting Around
Loughborough Junction station is perfect for getting to central London quickly. It is at the end of the road (about a 1-2minute walk) and in two stops, you will arrive at Blackfriars Station. From there, you can take a stroll along the river's South Bank, and see sights such as Tate Modern gallery, lots of restaurants, culture, street artists and look across the river to St Paul's Cathedral and other highlights of the city skyline. TIP: You can purchase individual day travelcards (the apartment is in Zone 2, so a 1-2 zone daily travelcard is probably the cheapest option and allows you to catch all modes of transport all day and night!)

Denmark Hill is about a 15 minute walk from the apartment, which on a sunny day can be taken through the fabulous Ruskin Park or just as easily by walking up Coldharbour Lane. The station offers the new overground rail line, which means direct access to cool spots such as Shoreditch (always fun) and also a regular rail line. TIP: You can use your debit or credit card, just tap in AND out, or you can purchase individual day travelcards (the apartment is in Zone 2, so a 1-2 zone daily travelcard is probably the cheapest option and allows you to catch all modes of transport all day!)

Brixton underground station is zone 2 on the Victoria line, and ideal for getting quickly into central London. TIPS: Green Park for Buckingham Palace and Oxford Circus for major high street shopping, of course you can change to any other underground line here. Usually there are also live music (or buskers) outside singing their hearts out!

Your local bus stops are here, and along Coldharbour Lane run the 34, 45, and 345 buses. TIP: At this bus stop you can catch the 345 bus which travels past Brixton, through Battersea, and across the river up to Chelsea (amazing views), finally stopping at the Natural History Museum (and others). Get yourself a seat on the top deck at the front and sightsee cheaply across London - well worth the trip...but try to skip rush hour (before 9.30am or between 4-6pm) as it gets very busy!

The 35 is a fabulous route direct to Borough Market (London Bridge stop) which serves excellent street food and is right by the river Thames. Definitely worth a visit, but ideally when it is not raining. You can then jump back on the 35 bus, as it trundles through the city workers, big banks and skyscrapers, and hop off at Shoreditch for some beers, cocktails, or visit one of their well made coffee houses. Try and get a seat at the front on the upper desk! Also ideally do not travel during rush hour (before 9.30am or between 4-6pm) as it gets very busy!

Originally built in 1911, this traditional theatre was lovingly renovated and is an icon of Brixton. They show many new releases, but more importantly is what else is happening inside, a fantastic bar, and upstairs they have various arty events (including live music), often for free or cheaply priced (under £5). They also serve food. It is also a perfect meeting spot because it is so easy to find. TIP: Go!

This place is infamous locally and listed as one of the top 15 places where chefs eat, not your traditional Chinese takeaway, instead a quality restaurant full of flavour, yet reasonably priced with a simple decor. Casual attire is perfect. Try the cucumber salad (it's fantastic) and the lamb skewers with rice. They also serve a variety of soups and noodles. About a 15min walk or 5mins in an uber or you could take a bus direct. Opening hours are 5pm-11pm weekdays and 2pm-11pm on weekends.

Classed as London's oldest and most renowned food and drink market, Borough Market is an awesome array of independent street food made from exceptional produce in a traditional pretty street by London Bridge. To get there, go to London Bridge and ask anyone(!), or once at the bridge, go down the stairs by the church towards the South Bank, and all the stalls are there. The market has existed for over 1000 years, and is fully open Wednesday-Saturdays from 10am-5pm. TIP: They have many cooking events, so if interested go to the Borough Market website and book, as many are ticket-only but sometimes they have free events. Great on a sunny day and then continue the walk along the South Bank.

Buckingham Palace is the Queen's principal residence, where she spends most of her time, and also during times of national celebration, many Londoners congregate outside. Look out for the Queen's Guards, soldiers who protect the queen, wearing a distinctive red uniform and huge hats. Construction started in 1886, and it remains a functioning working bridge splitting magically into two to raise open from the centre to let large ships pass. It is of course free to walk along the bridge, and there is an exhibition inside the Bridge, which is £9.80 for adults, and worthwhile for the stunning views across London from the very top. ROUTE: The most fun way is by river. Travel by rail from Loughborough Junction station to Blackfriars, walk to Blackfriars Pier and take the Westbound MBNA Thames Clipper boat to Westminster Pier (only £6.70!). TIP: the building is also lit up at night, and Downing Street is round the corner, but not much to see there.
