Sightseeing
Correctly called "Outdoor Capital of the UK", the area around Fort William has a wealth of activities for all. Outdoor activities include climbing the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, mountain biking at Nevis Range (home to the UCI World Cup event) or kayaking along the Caledonian Canal. For a more relaxing day why not take a wildlife cruise on Loch Linnhe, visit Neptunes Staircase, Inverlochy Castle, West Highland museum or Nevis distillery. There are plenty of gift shops on the High Street for holiday souvenirs.

A must see when the “Harry Potter” train crosses the viaduct. Why not take the steam train journey yourself, it is described as one of the best rail journeys in the world. Very popular so advanced bookings required but they keep a few tickets available for purchase on the day. At Glenfinnan there is also a visitor centre and monument, which tells the story of the Jacobite Rising in 1745. The centre has a cafe and gift shop

Following a natural geological fault line stretching from Fort William to Inverness, the canal was opened to shipping in 1822. You can watch yachts come through the lock gates, take a stroll up the Great Glen Way walking and cycle route or watch the “Harry Potter” steam train go over the canal bridge (4 times per day in the summer).

Get your camera ready this is a simply stunning drive from Fort William to Mallaig. On route is the quaint fishing village of Arisaig (recommend the Arisaig sea Kayaking Centre) and the stunning Silver Sands of Morar where you could be mistaken for being on a Caribbean beach (although a little colder!). Are you going onward to Skye? Take the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale.

Just north of Spean Bridge is a large three-figure bronze statue commemorating the service and sacrifice given by thousands of Allied troops during the Second World War. There is often a piper playing the bagpipes at the monument, and there are great views. Close by at Achnacarry is the Commando museum where the commandos trained during WW2.

Outdoor Activity
Travel up the mountain gondola to get spectacular views at the top (weather permitting!). Short walks can take you to two viewpoints and there is a café. In winter, it is a ski resort and in the summer, it becomes a paradise for mountain biking. You can hire a bike and ride the cross-county and downhill trails from the car park or for the experienced rider come down the world cup downhill track. There is also a high wire tree adventure where you can tackle obstacles high above the ground.

A highly recommended walk to the Steall Falls. A there and back walk of 3.5km on a well-marked path. It is quite rough and rocky with steep drops, but can be done in walking shoes or trainers. After walking through the gorge, you enter a wide grassy valley with a 105m drop waterfall. For the brave there is the option of crossing the wire bridge to get closer to the waterfall. This walk is highly recommended and very scenic.

Climb the UK's highest mountain. This is a 16km round trip climbing to a height of 1345m (4413ft). To begin with the path is relatively easy but becomes increasing arduous and exposed. The walk will take 6-8 hours to complete. The weather can be very changeable and the summit temperature can be 10degC lower than at the base of the mountain. There is often poor visibility at the summit with steep dangerous 610m (2000ft) cliffs on the NE face. On a good day the views are dramatic.

Food scene
Good choice of places to eat in Fort William although in July/August reservations are recommended as it can be busy. The choices extend from seafood, scottish specialities, pub food, pizza etc. There are two restaurants within walking distance from our house.
