Sightseeing

Pula was founded 3.000 years ago and is known for its Arena; one of the best-preserved amphitheaters in the world. Pula seems to accommodate everyone’s needs: beautiful beaches, colourful reefs and diving spots, culture, great food and history. A stroll through the city takes you past ancient Roman architecture like the Temple of Augustus, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, Hercules’ Gate and Twin Gates, Arena and Small Roman Theatre. Pula is the largest city in Istria.

In the 17th century in Pula famous French architect Antoine de Ville designed the new Venetian project Fortress Kaštel. The main objective was to make a fortress around the center of Pula, and on top of a hill is the place where the Venetian castle is situated. The stone from the large Roman theater was used for its construction, along with the one from other quarries around Pula. It’s interesting that the fortress was perfect for the first defense of the city, bay, and port and today is the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria. In front of the fortress you will see old abandoned canons it’s the ideal prop to make a good photo. The fortress offers a magnificent view of the city of Pula and the city’s bay. The fortress strategically sits above the city with stunning views. The underground tunnels named ZeroStrasse with the fortress on Kaštel hill with a lift, uniting two distinctive cultural attractions originating from the Austro-Hungarian era and the period of Venetian rule, respectively. Both sites are situated on the same location - one above the other -

Places to visit

Grožnjan-Grisignana is a former 14th century Venetian fortress turned into a little Medieval town with cobble-stone streets and small alleys, also important arts and music centre in Istria. Grožnjan is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves and although it’s a small town, there’s still a lot to admire.
Recommended for concerts of classical music, jazz festival, painting event "Ex Tempore", a number of exhibitions at the City Gallery as well as twenty private galleries and studios.

Bale-Valle, the hidden gem of Istria, medieval streets lined with 14th and 15th-century houses in a circle around the hill, ancient churches and the bohemian, artistic vibe of this place – all this makes Bale unique and full of atmosphere. It is one of the few towns in Istria, which still retains its character. Bale is a place that does not appear in most travel guides about Istria. This small town is located on the western shore of the peninsula, only 15 km from Pula, and 15 km before Rovinj which is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia and is visited by many tourists.
