During the week, you can catch a train from any of 6 stations in Montclair. The closest ones are University Heights, Montclair State University, and Mountain Ave. Unfortunately, service is very limited on weekends, but it does come to Bay Street, Montclair. Another option is to take the train to Newark Penn Station, Newark Broad Street, or Bloomfield Station, and then take a bus/Uber from there.
NJ Transit also offers bus service from NYC. The closest stop is Grove St @ Van Houten, Clifton.
DeCamp buses used to offer great service into NYC, but the company closed permanently in April 2023. NJ Transit is supposed to be stepping in to pick up the route, but i don't have any info on that yet. There is also a private shuttle company called Boxcar that is going to offer service along the same route, for about $13-14 each way.
I suggest confirming route/schedule/pricing via each company's respective website.

Food scene
About a 15 min walk....The Barrow House offers good food & great cocktails in a restored farmhouse. Outdoor seating in warm season.
