The ferry for Clare Island and Inishturk Island leaves many times daily from Roonagh Pier which is about 20 minutes drive from Mullagh Pond House. The ferries run frequently enough that you could plan to visit either island without staying overnight. Though there are good cafés on both islands it would be wise to bring some back-up lunch items in case your walk takes you to the more remote parts. Both islands are great for adventurous walking cycling or swimming. Clare Island was the base of operations for the 17th century pirate queen, Granuaile and a couple of her castles and an old abbey with medieval wall paintings are really interesting places to visit. If you want a unique experience of island grandeur and remoteness Inishturk is the place for you.

Carrowniskey Beach is 20 minutes drive from Mullagh Pond House and is fantastic for a long beach walk, swimming or surfing. Lifeguards are on duty during normal hours in summer and this is a good thing as the beach is open to Atlantic waves and swimming conditions can sometimes be challenging due to undertow. There is an excellent surfing school operating from the beach - all ages welcome.

Carrowmore beach is within walking distance of Louisburgh village and is a couple of miles west of Old Head beach. It is less sheltered than Old Head but more so than Carrowniskey. It's a good beach for walking or swimming with great views of nearby Clare Island and is fantastic for enjoying summer sunsets, perhaps after a meal in Louisburgh's Gaffney's restaurant or one of the other excellent eating spots there.

City/town information

The little town (perhaps village really) of Louisburgh is just 7 minutes drive or 4 miles from Mullagh Pond House. It has a good general grocery shop and is well endowed with decent cafés and restaurants to suit all pockets - at least 6, with most staying open for evening meals.

Westport town is famous as the gateway to the pilgrimage mountain, Croagh Patrick, known locally as "The Reek". But it is also a fantastic town in its own right, being blessed with many great cafés, restaurants and pubs and having near its centre the beautiful old Westport House and wooded demesne which are open for visits and rambles. There are also great shops including the award winning grocery store Supervalu on the main street as well as Lidl on the Newport road and Tesco on the Ballinrobe road. Craft shops, Carraig Donn and Foxford are located in the centre of town. You could easily spend a chilled afternoon enjoying the on-street cafés and shops, then have a lovely evening meal in one of the many excellent restaurants and round it off with visits to a few of the old traditional pubs, many of which run music sessions nightly in summer.
