Sightseeing

The SW Coast path is around 630 miles long, perhaps 52 days of walking - but the Portland to Lyme Regis section is very doable if you are based in Bridport. Take the bus east or west on the X53 route, which passes the house, and you can walk a different section each day.

There are three Portland Bill lighthouses, but this is the one you can climb up. 143 steps. There's a visitor centre with exhibitions. Not suitable for very small children. You can get the bus to Portland Bill: X53 to Weymouth, then very frequent buses to the Isle of Portland. By the way, one of the older lighthouses is the home of the Portland Bird Observatory, a place you should check out if you are interested in birds, particularly of the migratory type.

This is a unique place - hundreds of sculptures by hundreds of artists, all in the open air, all made from the famous local Portland stone. And then the fantastic views over Lyme Bay towards Lyme Regis. Free. One of my favourite places. Accessible by public transport: take the X53 from Bridport to Weymouth, then catch one of the Portland buses, which are frequent.

The best music shop you've never heard of. Vinyl and CDs out front, then a back room full of all kinds of music equipment, such as old music centres and tape decks.
