Food scene

This ice cream stand has been a tradition since I was a child! The ice cones are huge, and the food is pretty good, too (we like the fries and the chicken tenders). If you go for the perch fish fry on Friday, be sure to go early, as they regularly sell out! But they stay open until 10, so you can swing by until then for dessert.

Ice cream! And meat, if you want it. This charming biker / entrepreneur opened his place just last year after a decade of selling his sausage and jerky at farmer’s markets. We enjoyed generous scoops of Wisconsin-made Chocolate Shoppe ice cream in flavors like burnt butterscotch and lemon meringue, plus the old favorites. We weren’t sure what to expect when we pulled up, and agreed as we left that it will be a new favorite tradition!

If you’re looking for traditional supper club ambiance and a mean old fashioned, look no further. The Rock Falls is another establishment that has been open since I was a child - and my own young son was excited to order the frog legs he saw on the menu. Their Friday fish fry is actually broiled so you can dip in melted butter; this is not the place for takeout. Happy hour features $3 old fashioneds, which you can still order to go in massive tumblers.

The best cheese curds in Wisconsin can be found right here at Chuck’s Dykesville Bowl, about 10 minutes away (and conveniently located next to the Frosty Tip). I don’t think they have reopened the bowling lanes, which were closed due to Covid, yet. But the food is excellent bar fare, including a delicious thin crust pizza. The root beer comes in iced mugs and is perfect for washing down the lightest beer battered curds you’ll ever experience!

This bar regularly gets the "best burger in Door County" award, and for good reason: they are deliciously messy, served family style on platters and napkins. We like ours on their outdoor patio with a pitcher of root beer and a side of their chicken booyah, another local specialty. This restaurant is closest to us, just a five minute drive away.

This is the newest addition to the area's dining scene. Have wood-fired pizza and salad with a selection of Italian sodas, beer or wine in the charming, renovated interior or outside, under a large, covered patio that also features a full bar. Local food trucks often make an appearance on Fridays. We've only visited once, on the earlier side, and thought it would be as fun for the kids as it would be for a group of adults who wanted a few rounds of drinks. And, the Frosty Tip is just a short walk away if you're looking for something sweet to top off your dinner.

The closest local grocery store, Marchant’s is about 15 minutes away and worth the drive for the incredible butcher. Their specialty is meats, including trippe sausage, a local favorite. They also have a huge selection of homemade marinated chicken in the freezer case. In season, the vegetables are clearly locally grown and delicious; in colder months, you’ll do better bringing your own produce. Try the local butterscotch root beer!

While we've never been, other guests have recommended this grocery store as an alternative to Marchant's - noting that it is a bit closer, and with a larger selection of products. They offer free pickup with a $50 minimum order.
