Thanks to a 2018 James Beard Award nomination, Lona’s Lil Eats is no longer a hidden gem in St. Louis; luckily the food remains as good as ever. Inspired by the vibrant flavors of chef-owner Lona Luo’s native “hill tribe” in China, the dine-in menu includes fresh spring rolls, a spicy tofu wrap, housemade dumplings and whole pompano fish

At the Benton Park restaurant, chef John Messbarger mashes up dishes from New Orleans (a fried oyster po’boy) and the East Coast (a Maine-style lobster roll) to delicious results. With peel-and-eat shrimp, fresh oysters and Buffalo crawfish steamed buns, it’s a seafood-lover’s paradise.

Located in St. Louis’ historic Italian neighborhood, The Hill, Anthonino’s serves an eclectic mix of Greek and Italian favorites, including one of the most iconic local specialties: toasted ravioli. Lulu’s Local Eatery plates colorful vegan dishes that highlight the flavors and textures of fresh produce in fun ways. The sushi bowl, for example, pairs watermelon “sashimi” with sushi rice, avocado, cucumber, radish, green onions, pickled ginger, wasabi and spicy house mayo. Opened by Lauren Loomis and Robert Tucker in 2014, Lulu’s recently expanded to include an upstairs ping-pong bar serving creative late-night eats.

Neighborhoods

The Cherokee district is great mix of food, boutique shops, antique stores, coffee houses, nightlife, entertainment, art, and local flare. There are a bunch of authentic Mexican restaurants and businesses. This is one of the most popular neighborhoods for street festivals and the music scene. From St. Louis Neighborhoods: "Cherokee street reflects an infusion of family-owned businesses and creative people who fully embrace the beatnik vibe that emanates. In fact, they’ve created it. "Art spaces, blank spaces, storefronts, parks, sides of buildings and even sidewalks are canvases for the artists, musicians and residents who eat, play, work, create and live on Cherokee Street. "Pop-up beach bars and dumpster pool parties belie the undercurrent of vibrant energy that is Cherokee Street. "

I call Soulard "The Little French Quarter" because it reminds me so much of the french quarter in New Orleans, LA. You'll love the french architecture, the people and the food! St. Louis claims to have the biggest Mardi Gras event outside of New Orleans. It all goes down in Soulard, St. Louis' Mardi Gras hub, but there are a number of other balls and parades that take place all over town. St. Louis prides itself on the New Orleans-style cuisine it offers during Mardi Gras and there are plenty of highly recommended restaurants where you can enjoy it. If you'll be traveling with kids, try celebrating at the St. Louis Zoo. Admission is free and kids can make masks, listen to music, and join in a special parade.

I love Tower Grove Park. There is so much beauty there to explore. Find some time to plan a walk and bring your camera. The park hosts Food Truck Friday's, Festival Of Nations, as well as other festivals around the year. I used to live in the Tower Grove neighborhood. My house actually faced the park so I enjoyed the views just sitting on my front porch.
