19th century home, studio and designed landscape of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), his wife Isabel and their four children. The 250 acre historic estate features an elaborately stenciled, Persian-inspired mansion filled with original sketches, studies and paintings by one of the mid-19th century's most famous artists. A diverse decorative arts collection includes objects from around the world. Five miles of carriage drives, many of which are now pedestrian-use only, traverse a property developed in much the way Church created his canvasses, with strategically revealed vistas of one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the Hudson Valley.

"Named for the album is the Avalon Lounge, and its atmospheric aesthetic—sleek mid-century mod meets velvet-brocaded Storyville decadence—is, indeed, exactly the kind of setting you’d expect to see the group’s suave frontman, Brian Ferry, luxuriating in (he’s not here, but his picture’s on the wall). Urban, urbane, and impossibly chic, it has the feel of a hip boite one that might find secreted away down some hidden alley, accessible only to those in the know in Brooklyn or London. But no: It’s in, of all places, Catskill, which, as artistic types continue to get priced out of neighboring Hudson, is undergoing a welcome renaissance."

Awesome local book store where the selection and personal touch leaves the sterility of online shopping behind. Great place to stop by, chat with the owner Kristi and leave with one, or many, of her great selections.
