The square was built for the millennial celebrations of 1896, to commmorate the first 1000 years of the Hungarian state. The two colonnades displaying 14 emblematic historical figures of Hungary form a semi-circle around an column, which is surrounded by the seven Magyar chieftains and topped by archangel Gabriel.
