“Castelo. The view from under the umbrella pines on the Castle’s esplanade takes in Alfama, the Baixa, Bairro Alto on the hill opposite, and the river. The light here is particularly warm in the late afternoon, encouraging you to linger.”

“Torre de Belém. The defensive tower at Belém is a jewel of the Manueline architectural style, combining Moorish, Renaissance and Gothic elements in a dazzling whole. At the time of its construction, the tower stood on an island in the river Tejo, about 200 m (650 ft) from the northern riverbank, and so commanded the approach to Lisbon more fully than it does today. The land between the tower and the Jerónimos monastery has since been reclaimed from the river. Even if you do not plan to visit the inside (I never did it) it’s still worth the trip just for the walk near the river and the view from outside. While you are in the zone you can visit also the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the Centro Cultural de Belém and the museum Berardo. Do not miss to taste the Pasteis de Belém in Rua Belém 84-92 (avoid rush hours)”

“Mirador do Senhora do Monte, located in the neighborhood of Graça, offers a unique panoramic view, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful views of Lisbon, especially since it is one of the highest points of the city. lady-of-the-hill-2 The half-moon shape provides a wider view of Lisbon, and it is possible to see the Igreja da Graça, the Tagus estuary and the other bank, the São Jorge Castle and the roofs of Mouraria. Further down is the low Pombaline, the ruins of the Convento do Carmo, the Serra de Monsanto and Penha de França. These points are signposted on a tile panel in the belvedere, so visitors can identify the monuments.”

“The Elevador de Santa Justa stands 147 Ft (45m) tall and the structure is built in the same style as the renowned French architect, Eiffel. The similarity between his designs and this Elevator is not accidental, as it was built by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, who was an admirer of Gustave Eiffel and applied the same techniques used in some of the funiculars in France of the time. The Lift has a stunning observation deck at the top and offers magnificent views over Baixa. Since it was opened to the public, it has become one of the most popular viewpoints in Lisbon.”

“This lively and joyous market appeals to all - anti-materialists and consumerists. It has a strong local flavor because it has more variety of curios than similar European venues yet the sellers are more composed than those of African souks. Even the very old goods items or handicraft are quite affordable, not to mention ridiculous cheap second-hand clothes. Your new-old find will be a good quality price ratio, unique & environmentally friendly souvenir/gift. The downside: PLEASE, pretty PLEASE, do me and all shoppers a favor and don't forget to haggle.”
