Cave
“The complex of caves, known as the Lascaux caves, with over 600 paintings over 17000 years old was discovered in 1940. To protect the paintings from heat, humidity and contamination produced by over 1200 visitors a day, an accurate reproduction of the painted areas of the cave has been built into the side of the mountain, forming part of an award-winning museum just outside Montignac, in the Dordogne. Nearby Parc de Thot is a great place to picnic and see live animals representing ice-age fauna. ”

“Superb gardens, famous for its topiary and perched high above the Dordogne river. Fine walks around the gardens (including the 1km "ride") so plan to stay for the day. Take a picnic and eat in the picnic field next to the carpark with stunning views across to several other chateaux (just ask the staff at the entrance if you wish to go out and come back in again - they are very obliging). In the summer they do candlelit evenings.”

“Imposing medieval fortress dominating the river with some of the best views in the area from its rooftop terrace. If you visit the castle be sure to give some time over to visiting the village that has kept its authentic architecture intact.”

Museum
“Castelnaud is a lovely castle, restored to its nearly original state in recent decades. Like many of the castles in this short stretch along the Dordogne river it is situated on a bluff with magnificent views both up and down river. Chateau Beynac is clearly visible, where the English were kept under watch (and vice versa)! There are great displays of catapults and a small but fascinating museum of medieval implements of warfare and torture. Well worth the visit.”

“One of the most incredible attractions in the region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, La Roque St Christophe is a 1km long cliff, 80m high with 5 enormous galleries. Since troglodyte days, it has been a place of safe refuge. You get to see how the city was arranged and there are working replicas of the lifts which were needed to bring supplies up the cliff face.”

“Chateau Monbazillac is an impressive chateau, high up with views across to Bergerac. A dessert wine is produced at the chateau and in the vicinity and wine-tasting is available at the visitors’ centre. There is a display on the wine-making process inside the chateau. It is off the road to Bergerac, less than 30 min drive from Le Serpen. ”
