Sawmill Loft sits almost directly above the old sawmill that supplied the lumber for the short-lived gold mining town of Quigley. The foundation is clearly visible on the trail to the river. The narrow, rocky valley walls rise up dramatically to the east and west providing a full Sapphire mountains immersion. Brewster Creek valley and Sawmill Creek valley to the east and west respectively, provide early morning and late evening summer sun, extending your day. A short walk on a well-marked path gives you easy access to Rock Creek, putting you on some gorgeous trout water, connecting you to creek-side trails, and providing a gateway into the Welcome Creek Wilderness. The creek corridor attracts abundant wildlife including the occasional moose. Rock Creek Road hosts a bighorn sheep population. Visitors will likely see sheep between miles 7 and 9 as the ewes and lambs spend much of the summer on the valley floor and roadside talus. Rams become more likely amongst the ewes when mating season is upon them in late fall.
