I was born and raised in Venezuela. Throughout my upbringing, I served as my Dad’s right hand, assisting in sustainable residential development. This involved water collection systems as well as food production mindfully integrated within the built environment. My childhood experiences made me recognize the abundance that comes from our resources which can be supported and shared through regenerative practices.
At the age of 13, I was abruptly uprooted from the soils I grew up on due to the geopolitical stress in my home country. As I migrated to the United States, it became clear that people’s relationships with food were drastically different from mine. I noticed the excess of packaged products and the shortage of fresh local food that was still alive. This exacerbated my craving for the nourishment I always had from food. In grappling with the reality of food insecurity in the United States at the same time as the rate of food waste, it became alarmingly clear that an illusion of choice was being manufactured, not real food. As I learned more about the myriad of systemic dilemmas inherently at odds with the missions they allegedly aim to carry out, I knew something had to change. Growing up creating the alternatives to the current way we produce and access food, my experiences served as the ultimate resource to Grow On.
Grow On is where you will stay as a guest, on a quarter-acre plot of land in the heart of New Orleans. This lot was previously vacant, neglected, and overgrown and is now a lush edible landscape where the community can thrive. Grow On Urban Farms is transforming urban landscapes into functional ecosystems that produce food, support biodiversity, and cultivate community.
You can book a tour of the farm with us through Airbnb to learn more about what we do. The tour will include detailed information about our project in New Orleans as we walk through the space along with a specialty drink to sip on with farm-fresh ingredients.
Our stays are carefully renovated shipping containers serving as comfortable tiny homes, an example of more sustainable living in the city. During your stay, you will have access to the food forest, the outdoor kitchen, medicine bar, and full bathroom. We are very excited to host you! Please feel free to message me if you have any questions about the space, we look forward to having you.
