エリア

ローマ、Lazio、イタリア

Notwithstanding the history of the neighborhood, we want to emphasise that Testaccio is set in Rome downtown, therefore there are many restaurants and bustling nightlife clubs in the area.

The name comes from the so-called "upstream" (Mons Testaceus): 35 meters of debris (testae, in Latin) and various debris, accumulated over the centuries as a residual of transport that were headed to the port of great Ripa (Emporium).
The port of Emporio had been working since Roman times, and it was the landing point of goods and raw materials (primarily marbles, grain and wine) that, coming from the Ostia harbor, climbed the Tiber on barges towed by buffalo directed to Rome.
Over the centuries the amphorae cobs, which used to contain wheat and liquid food during transport, accumulated in mountains: hence the name - ancient - of Mount Testaccio or Mount of Cocci, and the choice - modern - of the amphora as a symbol of the ward. The number of stacked amphorae is estimated at around 25 millions. Empty amphoraes containing mainly oil were broken into stacks and then arranged neatly to give steady stability to gradients and sprinkle with lime to avoid odors due to the decomposition of organic residues.
Due to the urban reorganization in 1870, which destined this territory and that along Via Ostiense to the Basilica of St. Paul to industrial activities and "heavy" services (railways, slaughterhouse, general markets, gas factory transferred here from Circus Maximus) the area, which was well within the walls, was populated by poor farmers and shepherds. Even though it was an extremely poor district, as well as being the place of choice of pastimes and picnics of the Romans, it was the cradle of 'ASRoma with its football field.
Since the 1960s began the abandoning of the large industrial areas and localized services that from the beginning of the '900 were along Via Ostiense: in 1963 with the closing of the Centrale Montemartini, with the closing of gas works, gradually replaced by natural gas in the years 1960-70, with the disposal of slaughterhouse in Testaccio, to conclude in 2003 with the shut down of the old General Markets transformed into Centro agroalimentare Roma and moved out of the GRA, therefore on the outskirts of the city, in Guidonia Montecelio.
Since the 1980s the Ostiense area and its historical insediament were affected by a radical readjustment: the University of Roma Tre and new bureaucratic-administrative building have been installed in place of a part of the General Markets, Centrale Montemartini was transformed into a museum area, in the old slaughterhouse were opened a section of the MACRO, a museum, and the headquarters of the department of Architecture of the University of Roma Tre, while in the mountain of Cocci there were the headquarters of the local School of music of Testaccio. The final changes in the traditional arrangement of the district was given by the transfer of the historic market town of Piazza Testaccio to new equipped space at the bottom of Via Galvani (2012). Continuing the modernization, numerous fraschette and taverns became pubs, restaurants and food stalls , which underlines the bohemian and bustling nihghtlife attitude of the subburb.
Highlight:
Pyramid Cestia: It was built between 18 and 12 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius Dives, a member of septemviri epulones; it is in concrete, with brick curtain and cover of Carrara marble slabs; it is 36.40 meters high with a square base of about 30 feet in length and lays on a concrete deck.
The pyramid was built in only 330 days, maybe even less. In fact Gaius Cestius expressly ordered in his will that the heirs built the pyramidal tomb within that period, or otherwise they will loose the rich inheritance. Within this concrete mountain there is a single burial chamber, 5.95 × 4.10 m wide and 4.80 meters high, whose cubicle constitutes little more than 1% of the total volume of the monument. A comparison of the shape with the Giza Pyramids reveals that the structural strength of the concrete has made it possible to build the Roman pyramid at a much more sharp angle than Egypt's one. The more slender shape has allowed the Pyramid to reach a greater height with the same amount of material.
The presence of a funeral monument in the form of a pyramid in Rome is probably due to the fact that Egypt had become a Roman province a few years earlier in 30 BC and the sumptuous culture of this new province was also fashionable in Rome. It is the only pyramid outside of Egypt.

Rome War Cemetery: The cemetery is located in via Zabaglia, in the Testaccio area, along the Aurelian walls and almost a continuation of the so-called Cemetery of the English.
It was built as fifty other such facilities in Italy, by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission which still takes care of the management and maintenance, and it was designed by Louis de Soissons. To its realization - commenced shortly after the end of the war – it was dedicated to the area of the ancient "meadows of the Roman people" between the Testaccio mountain and the Aurelian walls. Consequently, it was plant the lawn that houses 426 burials. Initially devoted to members of the Rome garrison, there were also addition cfrom the province and some of the aviators and soldiers who died in prison.
The place is very serene, sheltered from traffic jams that rumble a little far away. It looks like a large well-kept pine-shaded garden, which is accessed from a covered, but open circular vestibule with a bronze box containing the names of the fallen. There is no wall separating the cemetery area from the outside world, only a gate.
Notwithstanding the history of the neighborhood, we want to emphasise that Testaccio is set in Rome downtown, therefore there are many restaurants and bustling nightlife clubs in the area.
