In the middle of nowhere and the heart of everything, Hillsdale has smart shops and excellent food within walking distance, and roads to explore in all directions.

Escape to the great outdoors, or from them with well-appointed shops, restaurants, bookstores, and museums that rival the best of any city in style if not scale. From Catamount Ski Area to Great Barrington and Hudson and a dozen trails in between, Hillsdale's a perfect launchpad for exploring the Berkshires and Hudson Valley.

お部屋
I’ve worked to preserve the rustic charm of my 1824 Dutch colonial while incorporating modern design and comfortable amenities. Nearing its bicentennial, this home is among the few in Columbia County listed in the historic houses registry. The previous owner made some delightful additions, including the windowed upstairs living room with mid-century fireplace, and the spacious downstairs master bedroom and bath, infusing some contemporary warmth and functionality you can’t always find in a 200-year-old farmhouse.

Large windows look out onto nearly an acre of property guarded by trees on every side. In the winter the lawn is usually blanketed with a coat of white snow. In the summer there's a deck with furniture for evening glasses of wine and stargazing — or firefly-gazing at just the right month.

With a large, fully equipped kitchen, a nearby grocer, and delicious restaurants within walking distance, you can cook feasts or buy them from our local pubs. I furnished for comfort, and past architects ensured the rooms fill with sunlight to enjoy a good book. Just beyond the property line are hilltop views and historic cemeteries.

The first floor has a spacious living and dining area recently renovated to lighten the old wood paneling. Attached is an outdoor sitting area and a master bedroom/bath with large windows looking out onto the yard and a 97-foot Norway Spruce.

The second floor has two bedrooms, a bathroom, and large sitting room with a second fireplace and large windows overlooking the tree-lined property. An additional small 3rd room can be set up upstairs with a Tempurpedic cot if your group needs additional sleeping arrangements. (Some 8th guests have pretty happily slept on the upstairs sofa.)

If you need, the lower and upper areas can be separated by closing the doors to the staircase and utilizing both entryways — so functional for a few people wanting their own space to themselves.

ゲストの立ち入り範囲
During your stay, you'll have the entire house and grounds to yourself, so make yourselves at home and enjoy the fireplaces, couches, and kitchen. I've put a lot of love in my getaway retreat and want you to enjoy it as much as I do.

その他の特記事項
The house is a few hundred yards from Hillsdale's line of shops, taverns, and grocery store, which means the main roads are quickly plowed in the winter, and nearly every cell provider offers great signal throughout the house.

We’re a quiet community, so out of respect for neighbors ask that music and noise is kept low after 11PM.

The Berkshires and Hudson Valley are special. Down every street are unique stores, award-winning restaurants, and artisanal ice cream shops and taverns. Great Barrington is just to the west, Hudson is a short drive east, Chatham is a little north, and Millerton is a quick drive south. If you want to take home a piece of history, Copake has frequent auctions — and local estate sales happen just about every weekend.

Centuries of art and culture are on display at the nearby homes of Norman Rockwell, Thomas Cole, Edith Wharton, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Frederic Edwin Church. My favorite spot in the area is the fabulously preserved Hancock Shaker Village. If you're looking for something more contemporary then head to the latest exhibits at Mass MoCA, one of largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the country.

When I'm not pulling weeds or building shelves, I'm cooking or reading, often with a glass of wine and my Brussels Griffon at my feet. There's usually public radio in the background, too, and if the weather's nice an open window to hear birdsongs and the grumble of lawn mowers down the road. I work and half-live in Brooklyn as a writer. On weekends I drive around to estate sales or hardware stores, or revisit hiking trails with binoculars and a field guide. I've lived in Texas, Oregon, and Belgium and have a mind to spend a few years in Scandinavia one day. My travel ambitions are to visit a place in Latin America, Europe, and Africa every year. I can't say I have a life motto, but I do have a favorite quote by Marilynne Robinson: "I want to overhear passionate arguments about what we are and what we are doing and what we ought to do. I want to feel that art is an utterance made in good faith by one human being to another. I want to believe there are geniuses scheming to astonish the rest of us, just for the pleasure of it. I miss civilization, and I want it back."

I won't be there during your stay but am always available by phone or text, and I’m happy to supply recommendations for where to eat, what to visit, or which towns and villages are most worth your time.

From Manhattan the house is a pleasant 2-hour drive straight up the Taconic State Parkway. From Boston it's 2.5 hours, or 1 hour from Albany (the nearest international airport).

If you don't have a car, or are coming from somewhere else, I can provide recommendations on easy and affordable ways to get up to the house.

I added a few to the Neighborhood, Getting Around section, but reach out if you want help navigating your options.
