Bill retired recently after 28 years in law enforcement, all of it on the border. He is also the former sheriff of Hidalgo County New Mexico. Early in his career he worked for the Southwest Research Station and the U.S. Forest Service in the Chiricahua Mountains, where he developed his passion for local flora and fauna. During his tenure with the Forest Service, he sometimes manned the Barfoot Fire lookout tower. Bill loves the southwest, especially its rich cultural history. He is currently president of the Cochise County Historical Society and sits on the board of the Arizona Historical Society's southern chapter. He is the author of the book "The Chiricahua Apaches: A Concise History," has written articles for numerous historical journals and magazines, and is a frequent lecturer at various colleges, historical societies and museums. His research on the Chiricahua Apaches has taken him all over the southwest and deep into Mexico. Bill lives near Portal, Arizona in a historic and scenic ranch house that was the former headquarters of a local ranching empire. Along with Jill, his beautiful wife of more than three decades, he enjoys spending time with his two grown children, five adorable grand kids and working with his cattle. Bill and Jill love welcoming guests from around the globe into their home.
