A beautiful thatched Cornish cottage with hot-tub with panoramic views over the valley. Within easy reach of beaches, Falmouth and St Ives, it's a peaceful haven with only the gentle sound of the stream and the buzzards that soar overhead. It is an easy stroll to the local pub, The Cornish Arms, or the famous Cusgarne Organic Farm to buy fresh eggs, bread, veg or even their very own angus beef. It is also on the renowned Deveron cycle trail and surrounded by bridleways and unspoilt countryside

Beaches and Cliffs

If you want something near and easy……We are at a midway point between the north and south coasts. You can drive to Porthowan on the north coast or to Falmouth on the south coast. Both are just 7 ½ miles away and have wonderful Cornish golden sands. Porthowan has a funky beach bar and is a typical north coast surfers and dog walkers paradise. In the other direction Swanpool and Maenporth beaches just outside Falmouth are more cove-like and have wonderful restaurants directly on the cliff-fronts with panoramic views ‘Hooked on the Rocks' (Swanpool) (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) and ‘The Cove' (Maenporth) (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). My first choice is Hooked but the other is great too. The tiny coastal path from Swanpool into Falmouth is stunning and takes you past Pendennis Castle. On the north there is a great section of coastal paths to walk from Porthowan to Chapel Porth and then from Chapel porth to St Agnes, which has a great unspoilt local pub right on the beach, The Drifwood Spas.

If you want to see wild seals…. head for Mutton Cove just east of Gwithian on the North Coast where you can often see hundreds at one time as they bask at low tide. The carpark is National Trust and they have a ‘seal report' on the path walking up to the cove with the day's sightings. Gwithian is a breathtaking beach in itself, and on a nice evening it is a great place to build a little fire amongst the rocks and have a sunset bbq. It is also near St Ives so one could head on into town afterwards for fish and chips in the Balancing Eel on the harbour front!

If you want to see something spectacular…. Kynance Cove on the Lizard peninsula. It is a jewel and worth the drive (about 30-35 mins). Combine it with a visit to the beautiful little tiny thatched fishing village Cadgwith Cove on the other side of the peninsular where you can buy fresh fish and just a short drive from the famous ‘Devils Punch Bowl' cove. The Lizard has its own microclimate with lots of unexpected species of plants and insects and is often sunny when the rest of Cornwall is bleak! Do check tide times with Kynance as in high tide the majority of the beach is submerged and you can't explore all the little caves and coves. Even so in high tide you get spectacular views from the cliffs and can do amazing coastal walks over to lizard village.

If it's wild and stormy….. one the best places to see those crashing waves is from the Ship Inn in Porthleven where the sea crashes against the windows and it has a roaring cosy fire and serves hearty soups and crab sandwiches. It's the right direction if you want to visit St Michaels Mount too which isn't far from their and also great in stormy weather. I also recommend Kynance Cove on the Lizard to see some spectacular waves or anywhere along the coastal road between Sennen and Zennor.

If you want to just bask…. The coves on the South Coast are all lovely and on the Lizard Peninsular. Try Poldu Cove.

Other Great Ideas

Cycle from Coast to Coast….(not as hard as you think!)

From an access point just 1 mile away at Bissoe you can ride on the most famous coast to coast trail in Cornwall described as ‘suprisingly flat' and fun! Ride your own bikes or hire bikes at Bike Chain Bissoe Bike Hire. The coastal trail follows the route of the Chacewater and Redruth Railway and Portreath Tream Road (which were built for the transportation of copper ore). In one direction the route takes you through some beautiful landscapes of our mining heritage to the small coastal town of Portreath and a lovely beach. In the other direction you ride to Deveron set on the banks of a pretty inland creek which flows into the Fal. It is great fun to end up at the always lively Smokey Joes Truckers Café for an enormous fry up after all that exercise, which conveniently is near the end of the trail (Scorrier,TR16 5BJ open 7am – 10pm)

Hire a Morgan for the day! (Perranwell Garage 5 mins from Cusgarne)

Explore Cornwall than in a classic convertible Morgan. Perranwell Garage have a traditional 2 seater and 4 seater Morgan available to rent, for a minimum period of one day (2 during the summer) for £175 per day. Something to remember and nothing quite like winding through the little country lanes these archetypally British classic cars! (Perranwell Garage, TR3 7PT, (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN))

Charter your own luxury yacht for the day!

What better way to treat yourself and make the most of the Cornish coast and estuary's than from the deck of a magnificent yacht and much more economical than you'd think if you can get together a group of 6 or more of you. Jeremy Bell in Falmouth has a lifetime's experience at sea, and uses his own gorgeous yacht which is harboured in Penryn. He encourages you to bring your own refreshments (fridges on board) so you can relax with your glass of bubbly and oysters with no extra costs and make a party of it! He also is happy to go wherever you desire (within reason!). Last time we chartered the boat for a half day, collecting from ‘The Ferry Boat' at Helford Passage and winding through the estuaries over to the ‘Smugglers Cove' where the King Harry Ferry Crosses which was a perfect afternoon. Call JEREMY BELL (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (EMAIL HIDDEN) advance booking strongly advisable.

Suggestions of Days Out

A Day of art and culture….
Drive (30 mins) to Penzance and visit the Penlee House gallery. Then drive on tiny route B3312 towards Madron over the heathland and tin mines amazing stone circles the Mel an Tol and the ancient burial Lanyon Quoit and the Chysauster Ancient Village. Head towards Zennor and drive along the dramatic coastal road towards St Ives that inspired the young Barbara Hepworth's sculpture. She often drove along this dramatic road with her father in their vintage car. Patrick Heron also lived here in ‘Eagles Rest' for most of his life. Stop for a pint by the fire in the atmospheric Tinners Arms in Zennor. Arrive in St Ives and go for lunch in the Porthminster Beach Café or Balancing Eel fish and chips (watch out for the seagulls) then the Hepworth sculpture gallery and Tate St Ives. Drive 30 mins home to cottage and collapse in hot tub.

A mini adventure…
Take the King Harry car Ferry over to the Roseland Peninsular (said to be the coast referred to in Jerusalem). This deep waterway was where the world war II liners were hidden as the enemy would have never guessed the depth of such a narrow estuary.

Food and Drink!

If you want something near and easy……
Pandora Inn, Mylor which is an ancient thatched pub set on a creek with a long pontoon. It is great for a drink, especially on a lovely evening on the pontoon, or by the roaring open fires and the food isn't bad, but is pretty pub standard and a little expensive for what it is. The carvery on Sunday however is excellent – booking strongly advisable: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) - Restronguet Creek.
The Cornish Arms is within walking distance and is very friendly, cosy pub with a pool table and good, affordable food. The Cornish Arms All Day Breakfast is particularly recommended and very good value and they often have special nights such as ‘Curry or Steak Night'. Frogpool, TR4 8RP (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
The Royal Oak in Perranwell have really lovely food, more expensive than the Cornish Arms but recommended. It's very small so booking advisable! Perranwell Station TR3 7PX ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN))
The Norway Inn at Perranworthal is aesthetically not the nicest pub, but the carvery on Sunday is excellent and always a good atmosphere.

If you want seafood………
The Wheelhouse, Falmouth Falmouth's best kept secret! The wheelhouse is tiny and tucked away down a tiny cobbled courtyard and sell delicious crab, lobster and shellfish. Book well in advance as it only has a few tables and they only open evenings weds –sat. Upton Slip, Falmouth TR11 3DQ
Hooked on the Rocks lovely restaurant perched on a cliff top with panoramic views over Swanpool Beach (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Oyster Farm Port Navas here you can buy fresh oysters directly from the farm and eat them on the jetty. It's a bit tucked away, but the estuary is beautiful and the Helford River. Head past the yacht club down the tiny lane until you reach the jetty and the oyster farm is on your left. If you're into your booze, visit the Spa nearby in Constantine which has one of the largest selections of wines and spirits in the whole country! The seal sanctuary is nearby too in Gweek.
Porthminster Beach Café no trip to St Ives is complete without a trip to this gorgeous little restaurant. I love it! It's tucked away so not inundated with tourists as with most of St Ives and they do a particularly great fishpie. Highly recommended St Ives TR26 2EB, (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)

If you want something special or romantic……
Hotel Tresanton Olga Polizzi's hotel easiest to reach by the St Mawes ferry from Falmouth, this hotel has a beautiful view over the bay with a wonderful outdoor seating area. The food is amazing and the whole set up is extremely beautiful and classy. It's particularly great on Summer Sundays when they have a BBQ with every sort of seafood, steaks, sausages and every salad you can imagine. Or just go over for a drink – St Mawes Cornwall, TR2 5DR (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Rick Stein Padstow expensive but worth it! (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)
Jamie Oliver Cornwall usual Jamie style with beautiful views over the surfing bay, particularly good at sunset in high tide as the waves come all the way up to the restaurant. Watergate Bay, TR(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)

If you want something different……

Carn Brae Castle This is a truly unique experience. Middle Eastern mezze in a candle lit medieval castle! It is quite unpretentious (some of these concepts tend can be) and very atmospheric – you feel as if you are transported back to the middle ages! The food is great (all Middle Eastern – hummous, babaganoush etc) and you won't forget it! Advance Booking essential as it is a small venue and they prepare in advance according to numbers Carn Lane Carnkie Redruth TR16 6SL (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)lti Curries, Falmouth There is a big Nepalese community in South Cornwall and in my opinion this is one of the best of the Nepalese restaurants run by the lovely Sita. Ask for ‘Momo' the Nepalese delicacy and she'll make it especially. Note Pirate FM often do 2 4 1 vouchers.
