NYC community gardens are not the only things to bloom in the Spring. The streets awaken & heat up. Crazy colors, messages & meanings emerge. We'll see the latest walls by big international artists, & local artists of every type. It's all relevant. Urban history is sprinkled in to provide context and connect dots. Artists & gallery folks sometimes hop into the dialogue, as does a customized soundtrack! Exploration begins at a local stronghold of the NY art world, born (like street art) in the early 1970s. After quick introductions, we'll hit the road. On bad-weather days we mine indoor sites like street-centric galleries. Nicer days typically cover more ground, and we weave about alleys & parks finding important (& sometimes just fun) art "in the wild." A dizzying array of graffiti bolsters street art stars like Shepard Fairey, Invader and Kobra (we'll see art by at least one of these stars along the route). Walks typically end in a quiet place- sometimes with a drink- to help process the visual overload. I'll pass out a map of recommended relevant spots in case you crave more, make sure you're comfy, & be on my way. Artist Photo Credit: Sara Erenthal (mural); Consumer (stencil)
I'm an artist and walking guide that has been living in NYC for 15 years. After teaching at the Cleveland Museum of Art & graduate school, I moved and began work at the Brooklyn Museum. I've also worked at a Lower East Side art school and cathedral museum in Manhattan and historic house museum & an old Navy Yard in Brooklyn. I do art walks via @GothamSideWalks- my company of 1!

There are nearly 200 art galleries on the Lower East Side, and we'll visit a few of the most relevant shows. Focus is on the legacy of art in the 'hood. Think CBGBs and the famed Downtown art scene of 60s and 70s, murals (legal and otherwise), art filled alleys and quirky artist-run spaces. It's a place where world class artists collaborate and decorate... and have been for decades. Special guests often pop up. Come see and hear for yourself!
