We start the day sampling the traditional Cretan breakfast* in a local shop that has been crafting traditional pastries during four generations. We then step into the tastes and aromas of the old Municipal Market in town, sampling staple products such as bread, pies, honey, cheese, olive oil, and spices. We smell and learn about different herbs, fruit, and vegetables and enjoy a cup of authentic Greek coffee. Once on the alleys of the old town we experience the most traditional backstreet culinary spots, visit different districts, such as the Turkish, the Venetian, the Christian and the Jewish ones, stopping in unique hidden corners, gardens and having interesting conversations with local artisans, skillful in the arts of ceramics, leather, and crafting knives. We will taste delicious local tapas, known as mezedes and learn as well about the different influences, that all the different civilizations which dominated the island during the centuries have had on the Cretan diet over the years. For those interested in social media, sharing pictures and making an impact with images, I will show you some of the most breathtaking picture spots of the town. *Note: if the experience is in the afternoon we replace the breakfast with a traditional Cretan ice cream :-)
Hi there! I'm a travel writer specializing in Greece travel and gastronomy. I’ve got a degree in translation for tourism and I've published a book and many travel apps for the Greek islands. I've taken courses in local gastronomy and I've also an informal education in local wines. I've lived in Argentina, the US, Italy, and Greece and I'm passionate about the local culture and traditions of Crete. As a journalist, I've traveled around the whole island, writing and taking photos for different magazines. I enjoy showing visitors places and neighborhoods off-the-beaten-track to make them taste the amazing cuisine of Crete. I also craft experiences for food/travel/lifestyle bloggers (being a blogger myself I can help with the technical aspects of it) but mostly for all those travelers interested in authentic local experiences.
Since food on the island is strictly fresh and seasonal, we will sample traditional seasonal dishes in a local "kafenio". The…
