This is a unique opportunity to explore and understand the beautiful Cape Peninsula and it's rich marine life with marine mammal scientist and photographer Dr Simon Elwen. Become a scientist for a day and support active research by a local non-profit organisation. Experience Cape Town's best land-based whale watching spots, secret beaches and forgotten whaling history. The Cape Peninsula lies between the cold waters of the Benguela Ecosystem and warm waters of the east coast. This makes Cape Town unique within southern Africa in having 3 different whale species and 5 dolphin species around our coast - all of which can be seen from shore! Four of these dolphin species have their global range limits in this area. Sea Search are using this fascinating 'natural laboratory' to look at which animals are where and how climate change might affect their habitat use down the line. Meet at the famous Surfer's Corner in Muizenberg to grab a quick coffee before we go. Our goal is to do three 30-minute surveys at key sites as well as record , identify and photograph any other whales and dolphins seen or reported by our networks along route. We'll also pass through historic Kalk Bay Harbour to see the seals, stop to check in on the penguins at Boulders and cross the iconic Chapman's Peak Drive en route.

We are passionate and productive PhD qualified scientists who run a small NPO in Southern Africa. Cape Town is our home and a study site from which we research multiple species of dolphins and whales. We also run research in Namibia where for the past 12 years we have established and run the Namibian Dolphin Project. Simon was born in SA and has a broad experience gained from working on cetaceans for nearly 20 years, and is regarded as a global expert on Heaviside's dolphins. Originally from the UK, Tess Gridley has been in SA for over 10 years and is South Africa's leading scientist in the field of cetacean acoustic behaviour. We look forward to sharing our passion and knowledge with you as you join us as a Citizen Scientists on our surveys of some of the Cape Peninsula's best whale viewing spots

Starting and ending at Muizenberg's Surfer's Corner we'll survey along scenic Boye's Drive , pause at the historic Kalk Bay harbour, then the Boulders area to see the penguins and old whaling station, Smitswinkel Bay for a survey (with coffee and snacks), then cross the peninsula and drive Misty Cliffs to Kommetjie Lighthouse along the coast road. We end with a drive along the incredible Chapman's Peak Drive with a pause for a last survey.
