You'll learn how to score and cut glass, creating different shapes. You'll learn to layer glass, frit and powders for success during firing in the kiln. Designs will be dependent upon the time of year. I plan to offer classes in conjunction with holidays, equinoxes, solstices, St. Patricks day, Easter, Mothers and Fathers day, etc., and depending on which holiday is coming up, you'll make a piece to commemorate the occasion! For more complex designs, I'll prepare a base out of clear glass, (ie, for a shamrock) and students will choose from multiple types, colors and textures of glass to embellish the surface of the piece. You'll be able to choose whether you'd like to create your piece to hang and catch light, or as a paperweight. I'll bring the pre-fired pieces back to my studio to and students will also be invited to come to my studio, check out my kilns, see all of the raw materials, works in process, and browse if inspired. I'll direct students to fun beaches to explore on the island after class, and to some great local restaurants and galleries, and great places to spend the night, island style. Your piece will be available for pick up the next day
I have been working with glass for 20 years. My first decade was in Santa Barbara, California where I showed every Sunday at the famous boardwalk show, (it's in the Guinness Book for the longest running art show in the Country!). I participated in shows in Northern California during that time as well, San Fran, Saulsalito, San Rafael, etc. In 2008 I moved to La Veta Colorado where I opened a gallery, which I ran for 5 years. It was a wonderful experience. I've been back in the NW for 4 years now, and along the way have taught classes to children and adults. I thoroughly enjoy teaching!
I'll bring all materials. Gloves, glue, glass, glass cutters, multiple types, textures, colors of glass, frit and powders.
Location of class will be the beautiful Camano waterfront inn. Students who want to spend the night can book a room Waterfront room with a private deck and hot tub! Please book in advance, as these go quickly. It's a gorgeous spot! I'll also direct students to great beaches and restaurants to explore and experience after class.
Don't worry, if you're shy about handling glass. I make it easy and fun for everybody. At this upcoming class, students will leave with a beautiful testament to spring - a flower created by them!
Having fun with glass fusing!
