All materials for the workshop are provided for: One 36 exposure roll of Kodak 400TX, chemistry, equipment, and five 8×10 sheets of photographic paper. Bring your own camera or we can provide a loner for the day. Schedule - Film and camera selection and orientation - Photo walk through Hilo shooting your 36 exposures - Developing B&W film and learning the chemical process - Meal break - Printing in the darkroom We are located in historic downtown Hilo right on Bayfront - you can watch the surf from the front door. The photo walk will take us to a lighthouse and beach, a bridge and waterfall, past the Pacific Tsunami Museum, and Farmers Market. This workshop is limited to four people for individual attention and guidance for every step of the process. No experience required.
My name is Mike Caputo and I am a firefighter in Hilo, Hawaii. For the past five years film photography has been an evolving passion. It began with shooting color film, then B&W, and then developing it at home. Eventually I purchased an enlarger and darkroom equipment to print in my bathroom (what I still jokingly refer to as Ye Olde Darktoilet). My interest in photography kept growing along with my enthusiasm to share this passion for print making. There was no community darkroom in the entire state of Hawaii, until now. After months of hard work The Hawaii Darkroom is open in Hilo!
The Hawaii Darkroom will provide a camera, one 36 exposure roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 film, and five 8x10 sheets of paper.
Most of this workshop will take place in The Hawaii Darkroom learning how to develop and print your own B&W film. The photo walk will take you through Hilo past beaches and waterfalls, swaying clusters of palms, and landmark architecture.
No photography experience is required and all supplies are included in the workshop. All you need to do is show up! Watch the weather forecast and dress accordingly, we will be doing a photo walk.
