CURRENTLY WE ARE IN LONELY PLANET TOP 6 FORAGING DESTINATIONS IN THE US! All along the pristine coast of Central California, many species of delicious edible seaweeds exist. Kelp is some of the most tasty and nutritious of wild superfoods! I will meet participants and take them to seldom visited local spots and teach them basic phycology (marine algae science) and sustainable harvesting techniques. Not only will participants partake in a unique experience surrounded by breathtaking scenery, but they will leave with the knowledge of how to sustainably harvest nutritious seaweed for themselves for years to come. We make an amazing seaweed Ramen in the traditional Japanese form at the end.

I WILL SEND YOU EXACT LOCATION AFTER BOOKING > We will be harvesting edible seaweed. Unlike land foraging, there are no toxic seaweeds to worry about. We will show you how to tide pool with minimal impact upon the marine environment.

Harvesting and eating seaweed is my passion that I will share with you as the guide of these amazing family friendly intertidal adventures. I especially love passing down harvesting knowledge to my own children and the next generation of foragers. I started off as an edible kelp harvester and also sell my fresh and dried product at farmer's markets. I also make a killer seaweed forager's ramen. I've been the foreman of aquaculture facilities such as the Morro Bay Oyster Company and a licensed commercial salmon fisherman and like to think I've become more sustainable as I age. My family heritage is Irish/British and harvesting fresh seaweed is in my heritage. Come enjoy the intertidal with me and my family!

We will meet at Estero Bluffs State Park a few miles north of Cayucos, CA. From there we will travel to one of several large tidepool areas between Estero Bluffs and Ragged Point, near southern Big Sur. No matter what tide is present there will always be edible seaweed available for participants to enjoy. We also are usually lucky enough to see many marine mammals and creatures that inhabit the intertidal ecosystem

We had an amazing time! We had been looking for an introduction to foraging and this experience was perfect. Spencer was very friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his engaging stories, thoughtful insights, and helpful recommendations. The fresh seaweed ramen he made for us was delicious and we are excited to experiment with the seaweed we brought home!

I love foraging on land and have been curious about learning more about foraging for seaweed. This was the perfect blend of learning, experiencing and socializing. Spencer was very knowledgeable and the location was great. The walk to the beach was only a few minutes and once there, there were many options , depending on your level of interest in getting wet and finding seaweed. The seaweed ramen was surprisingly delicious- even the young kids that were in the group loved it! I highly recommend this adventure!!

I wasn’t sure if we were gonna go but at the very last minute we pulled the trigger. And I’m soooo glad I did!! Went with my two young boys. This is the best adventure I’ve been on. The information Spencer gave us was an experience I’ve been waiting for my whole life. I am now confident and capable of finding the best edible seaweed in the tide pools and I’m off to a great start to making excellent ramen! I am so grateful. This experience was amazing! We loved foraging for seaweed and learning about the different types of seaweed. Spencer was awesome. Loved that we made ramen on the beach with the various seaweeds we collected. Ramen was delicious! This experience opened up my mind to all the things I can do with seaweed and how I can incorporate it into my every day cooking. I will no longer be intimidated by the seaweed section of my local Asian market!
