Visitors will join in the harvest of our fragrant lavender plants, by snipping off the flowering shoots, gathering them into tidy bundles, and hanging them to dry in the barn for future distillation. Mid-harvest, we will break for a homemade picnic lunch in the shade of our tall pines, with a view of the surrounding vineyard. Wine will also be served. An explanation of the distillation process, which happens after the lavender is dried--not at harvest time--will also be provided. (Artisanal lavender products will be available for purchase.) Visitors will be sent home with a large bunch of their own hand-picked lavender. The activities, including lunch, will last about six hours. The date has been chosen in order to coincide with the very short window of optimum timing for the springtime harvest of the blossoms of these delicate plants.
We are two families with a passionate interest in growing and using lavender. The beautiful terraces where we hand-planted 1000 lavender shoots beginning in 2014 are part of a vineyard that climbs a gentle hillside in rural Catalunya. The property is cinematically beautiful, with ancient stone walls separating the many levels of terracing, which also host cabernet and cariñena grapevines and albequina olive trees. Our training in the distillation and uses of lavender for its cosmetic and medicinal properties qualifies us to share this knowledge with guests who want to experience the delights of the springtime harvest of our fragrant crop. Our contemporary barn was specifically designed to accommodate not only our wine-making activities but also the distillation of the lavender on site, next to the terraces where it grows.
Picnic lunch, with wine, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and lavender fields
Bottled water will be provided during field work; wine and water will be served with lunch.
If guests arrive by train from Barcelona to Vilafranca del Penedés, car transport to the harvest site will be provided.
Harvesting tools and drying devices
Our lavender fields are located in the Penedés wine country, outside the small historic village of Torrelles de Foix, a one-hour drive from Barcelona. For those without cars, pick-up and drop-off will be provided from the train station in Vilafranca del Penedés, which is twenty minutes from the vineyard. Vilafranca is on a major train route from Barcelona and is a 53-minute train ride from Sants station in the center of the city.
Please let us know if you plan to arrive by car or by train. We will work out a train schedule prior to your arrival.
