We meet at my house and I explain the instruments (drums) we're going to play. We start with simple beats and practice as long as everybody gets it. No worries if you never have been drumming before in your life. I also explain what the drums stand for in the community and how they were used in ancient hawaii. After one hour of drumming, everybody goes outside and we start practicing the firedancing. The boys with the samoan fireknife and the girls with the mauri poiballs. We practice without fire for a while and who ever wants to light it on fire, is very welcome to try it (no worries I'll help you). You can take nice pictures and videos while performing with fire.
I am a drummer, drum-maker and drum-teacher. I've been doing that for more than 10 years and also did a lot of shows and luaus. I make, sell and play my own tahitian drums, have a lot of experience with traditional beats and teaching kids and adults. I also teach fire-dancing which is also part of the experience.
Drums; Practice knifes + Samoan fireknife; practice poiballs and fire poi balls
We will do the drum class inside my living room. I live up a hill so we'll disturb nobody with the noise :) The fire dancing part will be outside in my yard. I have a big tent if it rains.
And again, if you are beginners, never drum or played with fire in your entire life, don't worry, in my class are all levels of drummer and firedancer from 5 years to 70 years old!
