The Guided Tour begins with an introduction to the story. An overview of the news story that was reported on February 18, 1942. An American Convoy of 3 vessels left Portland Maine for an American Military Base in Argentia, Newfoundland. Only one vessel completed the trip. 2 vessels and 203 sailors lost, 187 sailors were rescued. We will discuss this special place. This coastal position is adjacent to the shipping routes to Europe. The Americans just entered WWII and were actively supporting the war effort against Germany. There will be a discussion on the three ships and their roles. The American Navy had recruited heavily and created a war machine. Some of the factors that lead up to this naval disaster will be discussed. Who are these people that came to the rescue? They were a hardy people of fishers turned miners. The rescue task was immense but a lifetime living in this environment gave these people unique skills required for survival. The trail leads to the shipwreck site. It leads through the places where people made a livelihood. They fished, farmed, mined, hunted, foraged this area of coast to support their families.
The stories I tell are the personal stories of the local people; my people, my townsfolk and my family. I am a volunteer with the local Historical Board. I have heard the stories of the fishery, shipwrecks and rescue from the towns elders. I have completed online training, Heritage Interpreter and Guide, through Emerit, an online training provider. I have done many training workshops, webinars and other Tourism related training provided by the Provincial Government. I have professionalized the presentation of these stories through continuous improvement over the past 5 years.
The location of this area had a significant impact on the story. The trail system is along the coast. It is very scenic with ocean and terrestrial views that are unique to this part of Newfoundland. Shaped by ancient geological forces, glaciers and the ever changing ocean a masterpiece has been created. There are many coves and headlands to explore along the trail. The trail is an easy walk to locations important to the stories.
