We will be practicing traditional Turkish art “Ebru” (which is commonly known as marbling art) for two hours. It is the art of creating colorful abstract patterns by dropping and splashing paints onto a tray of oily water with special brushes. These patterns are then transferred to a retentive piece of paper. It’s a mesmerising, magical world due to the nature of the used materials. Playing with colors on moving water and creating unique patterns each time, helps an Ebru maker to discover inner vision and creativity about himself or herself. It also helps to ease anxiety and stress by providing tranquility to the soul. The workshop will commence with a brief introduction of the basic materials that are used to practice marbling art. We will then continue with learning the history of ebru, the techniques and application process of traditional and modern ebru patterns. Lastly we will transfer them on paper or other materials such as an unfinished mdf or kraft paper to create your own design of a coaster set or your own handmade greeting cards to take home with you. This rare art form is mostly about focusing on the process itself and exploring/experimenting with colors on water surface rather than the product but still you can expect to obtain a series of at least 4-5 ebru papers at the end of the session, depending on the time you spend for each of your creation/design.
I moved to Melbourne in 2016 (from Istanbul/Turkey), completed Masters of Digital Media in College of Arts-Victoria University in 2018. I have a Bachelor’s background in Sociology and eight years of experience in education sector. I started to work on traditional “Ebru” (marbling) art early in 2015 and have been practicing it since then. During my professional life, I had the urge to play with colors and passion to use my creativity to produce tangible artifacts that reflect my vision and the way I see the world. Now I want to share my knowledge with people who are open to a unique experience – paint on water surface! I conduct workshops and short-term ebru courses for art lovers in Melbourne. IG: @ebruart_au
