We can either pick you up or meet at the trail head (we provide the meeting coordinates). Our regular hikes are what most people expect, i.e. "walks in nature with gorgeous scenery." They may be mild or intermediate, but will not require any technical ability. Strenuous hikes must be specially requested. The difficulty of the hikes is judged by both distance, speed and number and intensity of inclines. From the trail head we will hike for approximately 3-4 hours through the astonishingly beautiful red, white and gray sandstone mountains, valleys and narrow cracks that make up this area. We will take rest breaks as needed or requested, and at the half way point we will rest for a few minutes while we take in the scenery. During the hike our guides will regale you with descriptions of the desert plants and animals as well as the geology and history of the area. Each hike will either be a loop that will end up at the starting location, or point-to-point, in which case we will shuttle you back to the trail head.
I have been a hiking guide in the St. George Utah area for 23 years leading hikers for Green Valley Spa, and The Biggest Loser Spa. I was a geology lecturer for Road Scholar (touring and hiking for retired persons), teaching about local rock formations, volcanic activity, the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and other interesting geologic phenomena in this area. I've studied extensively the flora and fauna native to the deserts of the southwest, and additionally I am certified in first aid and CPR.
We will provide an energy/snack bar at the half-way point. In addition, we will provide cooling washcloths during the summer
We can provide transport from your location to the trail head and back for an additional fee.
All of our hikes will be through gorgeous desert locations, with sandstone and volcanic basalt as the backdrop, and amazing rock formations, deep canyons, and scenic mountaintops to capture your interest. In addition, some hikes will have slot canyons, while others may have petroglyphs, pictographs, pottery shards and other leftovers from the ancient inhabitants of this area. Don't forget your cameras!
Entry fees to the hiking locations will be taken care of in the final charges. Running shoes or light hiking shoes/boots are recommended. Heavy duty hiking boots are not necessary.
