A Pack Goat Petting Zoo! Upon arrival to the farm, I will greet guests and discuss the homestead, the available facilities and farm bio-sanitation protocols. I will present "goat etiquette 101" with guests and answer questions. We will take a short 2-3 minute walk through parts of the farm, over grass trails, to the "petting zoo" area and engage in feeding and socializing with anywhere from 2-10 friendly, naturally-horned, goats. I will demonstrate how to "saddle up" a pack goat and allow guests to take a short "goat walk" with our friendly trail companions! After guests have an opportunity to spend time with the pack goats and other farm animals, you are welcome to relax and enjoy hand-selected, in-season, local fruits, hand crafted chocolate, and more! You may byo lunch to enjoy in a primitive, yet comfortable garden space. Weather permitting, we have lovely views of Mauna Kea. CONVENIENT! I am Julie, mom & full-time homesteader. I have been working with goats for over 20 years in both dairy and homestead environments. Since moving to Big Island, I have become passionate about using pack goats in regenerative and restorative agriculture. I spend most of my time working with goats to develop my small, off-grid homestead. Along with goats, food & medicine, I propagate native species and Polynesian canoe plants for restoration projects off-site. I love sharing my friendly goats, as well as fun facts about goats, Hawaii, our environment and off-grid homesteading with others.
Fresh fruit & produce, when available.
Pack goat equipment: saddles, panniers, harness, leashes.
My unique, off-grid homestead is located in the historical area of Kaohe Homesteads in the Puna District of Big Island, Hawaii. Puna is home to Pele, the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess. Surrounded by young lava flows on all sides, our farm is one of the "lucky" ones to be spared in both the 2014 lava eruption and the massive 2018 eruption that lasted 3 months and covered 700 homes.
Good for small kids, limited time and/or those desiring a less strenuous activity. Good for group size 5-10+ This experience will be cancelled in case of heavy rain. Drizzles ok & expected.
