A DAY OUT WITH A DIFFERENCE! WITH OUR EXPERIENCE YOU WILL MEET REAL FISHERMEN & EXPERTS ON AN AUTHENTIC WORKING FISHING HARBOUR The day starts with welcomes teas and coffee, a short walk on along the harbour explaining the different types of fishing vessels in the harbour, the gear they use and what fish types they are targeting. We then go into Dorans fish shop to discuss where fish comes from, why so much fish is imported into Ireland and why and what types of seafood we export as a nation Then its back to the school for hands-on learning and more discussions about whatever the participants decide is their particular point of interest although we do have a schedule for guidance. Topical subjects such as fish conservation methods, the effects of Brexit and plastics in the ocean are common subjects for discussion. The ever-popular knot tying and splicing course usually makes for a lot of fun as some people are naturals where others are all thumbs! We have even recreated an old trawler’s wheelhouse complete with helm to help explain the huge amount of knowledge you need to have to be a skipper of a modern fishing vessel. In fact, if you have any question about sea fishing ask us!
Seafood from your chosen fillet from our fish shop, fresh from our trawler and chosen during the workshop.
Wine or soft drinks from our restaurant. Tea and coffee on demand.
Equipment for our friendly competitive Knot tying, net mending and splicing fishermens skills section.
At Dorans on the Pier, we know our seafood. With 3 brothers who have fished, with over 60 years in the business between us, we really do know our stuff. We still operate our own trawler, the Celtic Fisher and have a busy factory supplying to some of Dublin's finest restaurants. We have 3 seafood restaurants, Octopussy and The Oar House which are beside our Shop and Howth School of Fish on Howth's West Pier as well as a third restaurant above the Beachcomber bar in Killester. Where better to sample an Authentic Working Harbour Experience than with the real experts, keen to share our knowledge
Our Guests will meet at Dorans on the Pier which is accessible by DART, about 20 minutes from Dublin City Centre. Airport Transfers can be arranged by Range Rover where needed, on request.
