Starting from the understanding of the basic historical roots of contemporary Cuba, we will discover a city, a country that at times seems totally indecipherable to the stranger. We will live almost four hours of intense and animated talk about economy, society, politics and culture, among other topics, while we enter inside a universe that is beyond the reach of ordinary tourists. Going through different neighborhoods and experiencing our customs, we promise you an approach to the typical life of the people of Havana. In just a few hours, you will understand and feel first-hand the unique successes and setbacks of our island, gaining an understanding of why and how Cubans dance every day at our own beat. To finish, we will visit a local´s house to interact directly with the community. There, our friends will share their vision about Cuban reality, complementing our explanations with vivid memories and funny stories.
Hey, I'm Patricia and I'd like to show you what's behind the indecipherable doors of Cuba. The team I lead of assistant professors in economics, history and sociology has created this "Knocking on Cuba" project to do so. If you are a more sophisticated visitor, if you have a “to-ask list” on Cuba, you should definitely join us to shoot it all. Which achievements and setbacks come from the Cuban socialist model? What's the history behind our people? How is urban and rural life? What's about minorities or vulnerable? Come to openly discuss while experiencing on the field, how it looks like being Cuban, as close as possible to the facts.
We´ll share some typical snacks along the way.
We´ll include a bottle of water for the walking. To finish the experience we´ll share a cup of coffee, a very Cuban…
We´ll take any kind of public transportation to move around different neighborhoods.
We are going to wait you at "Locos por Cuba" a very cozy Cafe very close to the University where we teach. We will share an introductiory drink, to broke the ice with some minutes about Cuba history and to get ready for taking the streets. Then we are going to walk around Vedado area and will take public transportation to Centro Habana municipality.
To be punctual is very important for a successful dynamic of the experience. However if you are a bit late, we´ll be on starting point for the first 20-25 minutes.
