We will start with a look at maps and other visuals of the region to give you a sense of the appellations, the notion of "terroir", and how the wines are classified here to offer a backdrop for the wine tastings. Then we will head into the vineyards and through the charming wine villages to discover the nectar of Burgundy. A typical day will include 2 to 3 wine tastings at small family domaines, where you will taste an array of their wines, often with the winemaker themselves. Between the visits we will be stopping in the vineyards to get a closer look at where some of the most famous and expensive wines in the world are grown. Learn about the viticultural methods specific to the region, and the origins of wine production here going back over 2000 years. Like a great wine, balance is necessary! We can include visits to a medieval castle or a famous historical site, and indulge in visiting some of the local culinary delights to be found here, including cheese, chocolates and truffles. And of course to fully understand Burgundy one should pair the wines with a delicious local meal... There is a cornucopia of great restaurants to choose from, depending on the style you prefer.
My diverse career in the wine world originated in California in the late 80s, which enticed me to spend an immersion year in Burgundy, now my permanent home. In 1999 I started creating personalized itineraries for individuals and private, small groups of wine enthusiasts to discover this renowned wine region. Sharing the insider's knowledge of Burgundy I've gained is my passion, along with its wines and rich cultural heritage. Helping make the complexities of the region and its wines more understandable, approachable, and, most especially, more enjoyable for you is my mission!
Most tastings are complimentary, if you choose to purchase wine, and there is a good system to have the wines shipped home…
We will be going to small, family wineries that generally require an appointment to visit, and often need a translator. Among the 4000 producers in Burgundy it can be quite daunting to choose where to go. I have developed a network of wineries to visit who have very good wines with the option to purchase, and even ship them, to your home.
