体験できること

"Kingsugi" is an ancient traditional technique of restoring cracks and chips in pottery with "urushi" (Japanese natural lacquer, sap of the Urushi trees). By using lacquer and gold, a broken pottery get a new life again, and became more beautiful.

Our atelier is located in front of Daitokuji temple (大徳寺 in Japanese). Daitokuji temple is well know as the birthplace of tea ceremony culture. Kintsugi developed with tea ceremony culture, so you explerience it in front of the birthplace.

In this experience, you'll hear the story of Urushi trees, and how to get it. You'll surprise to see how precious it is. Then we'll see all the process of Kintsugi restoration. Basically it takes about 8 process to do it and each process take a few days to dry, but in this experience, we prepare each process one, like cooking TV show, in that way, you can see and experience all of it. Highlight of this experience is you can draw urushi on a cracked pottery, the sprinkle on gold powder. You can take it back home as a memory of the experience.

Our process of Kintsugi is authentic way that people use hundreds of years. We use Japanese natural urushi which is getting hard to get, use authentic tools, also you can see many other kintsugi artwork on the venue.

After the experience, we'll serve you Macha green tea with pottery with Kintsugi.

An absolutely unique experience that you should take if you have the time. The art, patience, process and history behind Kintsugi is so rich and interesting that there was not a dull moment. We've been travelling around the world for the past 7 years, we have done and seen a lot of things but this experience took a special place in our heart. Arisa welcomed us in a quiet sidestreet in the center-northern part of Kyoto in the traditional Japanese workshop with a very welcoming and cheerful atmosphere. Honestly time flew by as we went through each phase of the processes of Kintsugi, which was a very calming yet entertaining experience as we were told both the history as well as personal experiences. If you're going to want to do a local experience, take it from veteran travellers, do something unique and lokal; take on this Kintsugi experience. ;-)

I purchased this experience as a birthday present for my husband while we were on vacation. Both of us are artists, and he is a potter. We have been interested in the traditional art of kintsugi, which enables pieces to remain food safe when fixed (and even more beautiful than before), for a long time. This is a long process (8 weeks+), so they have figured out a way to work around that to allow guests to participate in each step to learn how to do it. It was very informative, and both of us feel like we could do it at home now with some more practice. One thing to keep in mind is that urushi is the same plant family as poison oak/ivy but even stronger. If you are allergic to to this, be sure to cover up and wear gloves, and wash well afterwards.

Awesome experience if you want to learn more about this specific field of repairing and Japanese culture. You will learn that there is a difference between Japanese glue and Chinese glue, which is much cheaper and something you can buy as a kit in a store to do home repair is something different. This stuff is about quality and longevity, real history and treasure of loved belongings. Highly recommended if you want to deep dive Japanese culture!

Arisa est très inspirante et sympathique et nous a partagé son savoir-faire et sa passion. Une expérience unique. Nous vous recommandons d’en profiter pour visiter daitoku-ji et ses admirables jardins - juste à côté.
