On this two-hour walking tour, we'll discuss the people and institutions that have put Philly on the map as one of the most queer-friendly cities in the country (and the world)! Hear how the 13th street corridor developed from a red light district to one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city! Discover the controversies, paradoxes, and hidden histories of the only formalized "Gayborhood" in the country! We'll visit the oldest continuously operating gay bookstore in America whose profits go to HIV/Aids orgs, sneak into the back of the restaurant and cocktail lounge that keeps a secret mural hidden in its stairwell, and more. Along the way, I’ll highlight the queer activists I love and admire and suss out the many reasons I am hopeful for the future of the LGBT movement!
I'm the co-founder of Beyond the Bell Tours, an inclusive historical walking tour company that aims to highlight marginalized communities and put the people back into people's history. On the side, I work for an international tour company called Context Travel, write and share poetry across Philadelphia, and volunteer as a peer counselor at the William Way LGBT Community Center. I have lived in Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, and Maine, but always return to Philadelphia- the city I love and can't wait to show you!
The tour will walk through the gayborhood! We’ll see colonial era alleyways and new queer developments!
