We will meet at the trailhead for our hike. I will share with you "The Kipuka Kao Project" story and goals as we choose tools and plants for land & Hawaiian Canoe plant restoration projects within old lava flows. We will have a goat "get-to-know" session where you will hear a little history about how goats came to Hawaii, learn about goat packing, and how to handle pack goats on the trail. We will saddle up the goats, go over the trail reminders and begin our hike. Then we are OFF TO THE LAVA FLOW! Through grasslands and forest, we hike to a hardened lava field and traverse to a hidden kipuka, an oasis within the lava. We will spend time at the kipuka in work and repose, restoring land as well as our own: mind, body & spirit. The goats carry our tools and eat the invasive species, we replant and repopulate the kipuka with ancient Hawaiian canoe plants: food and medicine. During our visit, we will make time for working, relaxing, snacking and some exploration. IN CASE OF POOR WEATHER/TORRENTIAL RAINS (drizzles ok) HIKE WILL BE CANCELLED OR RESCHEDULED 7pm-10pm slots are SUNSET/FULL MOON HIKES: (Goats optional & weather permitting) STARGAZING & CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES: INQUIRE
Aloha! I'm Julie, full time mom, farmer & goat-herd. I've been working w goats for over 20 years in Utah, California and now, Hawaii. Since I moved to Hawaii, I have been raising pack goats on my off-grid, permaculture homestead in Puna District. I have socialized & trained my goats to be friendly hiking companions and helpful pack animals. We hike local lava flows and actively participate in invasive species removal and canoe plant propagation. I am passionate about Goats & Land Stewardship. I give tours of my unique rainforest farm and nearby hardened lava flows. www.goatwiththeflow.com

We will hike the 2014-2015 Lava Flow to a "hidden" kipuka. Unique and pristine scenery, ocean views across stark, black lava, this is a unique opportunity to "give back to the land" in an environmentally & culturally sensitive restoration project while hiking with pack goats. *THERE IS NO ACTIVELY FLOWING LAVA ANYWHERE ON BIG ISLAND AT THIS TIME*
Facilities are limited, please plan accordingly. Composting toilet at my farm, NO FACILITIES ON HIKE. Be prepared for rain. Be prepared for sun. Rugged, sometimes hazardous terrain.
