People call us crazy, but we believe that each component has a role to play. We'll meet at our gate and then walk up the old cane road past some of our apple banana orchards before seeing most of the livestock. Our homestead has heritage breed Kunekune pigs that eat bananas right out of your hand, egg-laying hens, large Duroc pigs in pasture (yes, pigs do eat grass!), sheep, and cows (who also enjoy being hand fed bananas). Learn how we rotate livestock throughout the farm and experience Hawaii homestead living. When season permits, you can even cut down a banana tree and taste bananas fresh off the rack. The tour is very visitor-driven, you're welcome to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable. At the end of the experience, sample our award winning honey, dehydrated apple bananas, and take in the sights and sounds of the farm. Other farm products are available for purchase. If tour availability time doesn't work for you- please let us know. We picked it because it is everyone's feeding time, but we're flexible.
Brittany And Bodhi
Two years ago, Brittany and Bodhi decided to leave their city life and trade it for authentic homestead living. Our goal is to live in harmony with nature – carving out a traditional homestead of Hawaii's past. Brittany left her corporate job and is now a food and agriculture writer, certified in Korean Natural Farming, and regenerative agriculture speaker. Bodhi is the 5th generation of his family to farm on the Hamakua Coast. A farmer by day, Bodhi is also a virtual medical director and Functional and Integrative medicine practitioner by night. Sugar Hill Farmstead is their 10-acre ocean view farm in historic Honomu near Akaka Falls. We started farming to heal ourselves, the land, and bring our community together. Our farm looks a little different than most; we have livestock, crops, and nature– all in balance with one another.
Seasonal fruit and dehydrated apple bananas
We will be walking around our 10-acre Sugar Hill Farmstead property for a memorable and hands-on experience. Animals are rotated throughout the property on a daily to weekly basis so their exact location changes frequently. End the experience with a taste of our award-winning honey and view of the ocean as we walk back to the front gate.
Please let us know if there is something specific you'd like to cover, or if you aren't comfortable with specific animals. Bees are present.
