We will meet on the corner of Clunies Ross St and Black Mountain Drive just west of the city. From here a bush track winds its way up the mountain. The track is steep and strenuous so you need to be reasonably fit and agile. We will stop along the way to catch our breath and look at the view. I'll chat about the landscape and point out local species such as kangaroos and birds. The track provides a great view of the surrounding area and the vegetation changes as we make our way up. After about 1 hour of hiking we will reach the top of the mountain. From here we take the fast elevator to the top of the tower for spectacular 360 degree views of Canberra - described by many as Canberra's best view. The cost of entry to the tower is included in this experience. There is a basic cafe and souvenir shop you can visit at your own expense. At the top we will have approximately 30 minutes to look around and chat before going back down the elevator. Using a different trail we descend the mountain to a lesser known entry of the Australian National Botanic Gardens. We wander our way back to the meeting spot - taking in the largest living collection of native Australian flora.
Black Mountain Tower I will pay for your entry into Black Mountain Tower and the elevator ride to the very top
Having lived near Black Mountain for the past 10 years I have explored all of the tracks and trails on the mountain and this is by far one of my favourites. I've planned a loop walk so we don't have to retrace our steps. We will enter the Australian Botanic Gardens via a lesser known (secret) entrance, wandering our way through unique native plants. I'll point out some of my favourite species and hopefully spot a kangaroo or wallaby.
At times the walk is strenuous - please bring suitable clothes for long distance walking. You will also need to bring your own water and snacks. You need a good level of basic fitness.
