We're running this experience and we're happy to have you! :) We start in the first ~45 minutes with an (as much objective as possible) introduction to Hungary's modern era, starting from the WWI and focusing on the last 30 years (change from Communism to our young democracy), focusing mainly on historical, economical and political aspects. In the second ~45 minutes we enter a conversation and you are able to ask anything you've ever wanted about Hungary (and more!): let it be controversial politics, its turbulent past or uncertain future, economy, our personal opinion, ideas for change, etc. On this experience we aim to show you the scene of Hungarian mentality, politics, economy or any other aspect of our lives that you wouldn't be able to hear anywhere else. You are invited for a drink (beer / tea / coffee, etc.) Maximum 6 guests. The idea of this tour came from a recent travel to Russia where one couldn't find someone who'd enlighten us without taboos about their situation and give an unbiased personal opinion.
We are Budapest Explorers, young (20-30s) Hungarian individuals with education ranging from history through international relations to law. Most of the conversations are held by - Daniel who lived in Poland, Italy and Spain outside of Hungary and is a passionate father, tour guide and educator with degrees held in history and international relations - Nandor whose background is in law and history and studied in the US while - few of the tours are held by fellow tour guides with backgrounds in history or similar. We created this experience so one can get to know facts and our opinion on Hungary's recent past and present including changing from Communism to democracy and the creation of "illiberal democracy" in the past few years. We believe in honesty and will try to answer all questions! Read about us in the reviews!
The setting of this tour is pretty basic: a cult café that hasn't changed almost nothing since the 1970s. It's a favourite meeting point of locals but one can find plenty of foreigners here too.
