During the first half of the tour we'll dive into the history of Amsterdam and how it became the most liberal city in the world. I will take you on a story framed journey through the historic city center. In the heart of the Red Light District we will find the oldest building in town (the Old Church). Next to the church are the Red Light windows and adjacent to the windows a kindergarden. It captures the soul of the city; it's basically Amsterdam on a poststamp. After gaining a better understanding of Amsterdam and how it became the World Capital for gay marriage, recreational drug use, prostitution, abortion and euthanesia, we'll take the ferry across the river IJ to an old industrial shipping wharf in Amsterdam North. It was abandoned in the 1980s and slowly converted into an underground hotspot for prospective local artists in the 1990s. Today the old shipping wharf in Amsterdam North is a salute to Amsterdam's Liberal Spirit. The artist community is mostly self-regulated and the city doesn't exercise much control. It is the most secret hidden gem of Amsterdam and a must-see for anyone who is interested in Amsterdam's local art scene. We'll check out loads of extraordinary pop-up art, street art, shipping-containers-turned-artist-studios and graffiti art. After the tour is finished we will go for a drink in Pllek, an epic bar with a fantastic horizon view of the city.
Check my bike tour for 650+ reviews and 4.97 rating: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/264784 Hi there! My name is Pim and I am passionate about art, history, culture and anything out of the ordinary, whether it be people, things or concepts. I'm especially fond of alternative street art that is raw, underground, alternative and industrial. As a former sustainability consultant, I am proud to be Dutch, liberal, open-minded and respectful of nature, other people and cultures. During this tour you will experience Dutch liberalism, induced by pragmatism, a.o. concerning gay marriage, euthanisia, abortion, drugs and prostitution. I have lived with many artists and creative minds in squatted houses most of my life and I've worked in Amsterdam as a local tour guide for many years. I can't wait to show you Amsterdam's liberal landscape!
