In this half day workshop, Catherine will introduce you to the traditional felting process. You will see and touch lots of examples and briefly hear the science behind this skill. You will have the chance to touch exotic fibres such as camel down, cashmere, mohair, possum fibre and soy bean fibre - all natural across plants and animals. After a short demonstration, you will begin the 1st of 2 projects, a small felted 3D flower decoration. You can finish this to be a hair pin, brooch or other accessory. After short break and refreshments, we continue with the 2nd project, a felted flat abstract fibre art piece. You can finish this with a small hanging clip. In both these projects you can choose from over 50 shades of merino wools, silks and other interesting textile items. Felting is a very rewarding process and relaxing. Just by using olive soap and water, the fibres will transform into a fabric - the oldest way to create a textile. Catherine will share the knowledge she has gained over 20 years of working with felting. Hopefully, you will be inspired and learn a new skill!
Catherine is an artist working with paint, print, felt & stitch. Her work explores contrasts of colour and texture in a unique way. Vibrant & tactile, her pieces present the ordinary as extraordinary. Catherine completed a degree in Fine Art at Huddersfield University over 20 years ago and has been an Artist ever since. Whilst studying, she had the chance to go abroad and learn new skills at The Arts & Crafts Academy of Kuopio central Finland. It is here she learnt the ancient Scandinavian skill of feltmaking. She now regularly teaches art classes from her home studio in a converted church.
