This introductory workshop will cover the basics of cold-process soap making, including common oils, different fragrances, optional additives, colorants, and accommodations for lye safety. I will demonstrate how to make a batch of soap from start-to-finish, with step-by-step instructions along the way. Then: your turn! Each participant will have the opportunity to make their own round of custom soap, with a scent and color of their choice. Depending on comfort-level, we may try throwing in an additive or layering the soap for a cool effect. Whatever you choose, each guest will go home multiple bars of their own custom, handmade soap. And, more importantly, the knowledge of how to do it for next time! Please note that the soap will need to cure in its container for a minimum of 24 hours. If traveling, please plan accordingly. Alternatively, we can arrange for soap to be sent to your home after three weeks of curing for an additional fee.
I am the owner of Make + Take Studio (aka Frigg's Mercantile), a shop & maker space in North Portland. I have been making my own soaps, lotions, balms and other DIY goodies for over a decade. My goal is to make everyone comfortable crafting it up on their own by the time they leave the studio. We regularly host DIY camps and birthday parties for kids (ages 7+) as well as group events for grown-ups (bachelorette parties, baby showers, team-building, you name it!).
Sparkling water We can easily arrange for other accommodations, if needed.
All workshops are hosted in our NEW studio at 3808 N Williams Ave #134 in the "spine" of the HUB building. The studio's high ceilings and big windows make for a bright and airy space!
You will go home with soap that will need to remain in its container for a minimum of 24 hours without disruption.
