You will be among a select group of people who will experience an exciting event in the attic of St Thomas' Church in London Bridge: a secret concert in the oldest operating theatre in Europe. After climbing the 18th century spiral staircase into the bell tower, you will be greeted at the shop and lead into our wonderful Herb Garret. On arrival you will have access to our donation bar as you take a look around the museum. When the time is right you will receive a short introduction to the history of the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret and the grisly world of Victorian surgery before the advent of anaesthesia and antiseptics. Then you will be welcomed to enter the old operating theatre itself, a space that once only knew pain, loss, and hope and on this one night it will know the joy of music. It will be a memorable night. After the concert is over, you will be able to linger to take a last look at the museum and our amazing gift shop. Hopefully, you will leave feeling the exhilaration of having discovered several secret gems! Future artists: -4 Dec, 2018: Jay Johnson (Classical/Folk) -18 Dec, 2018: Theo and Vimala (World/Jazz)

The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret is located in the attic of St Thomas' Church, which once was part of Old St Thomas' Hospital. The building is a redbrick structure with white dressed stone at the corners. It has huge round arched windows and a square tower. Please, go through the tower into the foyer, which is shared with Duddell's of Hong Kong, and then take the grey door on the left and climb the 52-step spiral staircase.
What makes our space special is also what makes it challenging: the only way into the museum is through a narrow 52-step spiral staircase. This is a shared experience with other museum patrons.
