Join me on an art gallery crawl to experience Toronto's contemporary art scene and make an art souvenir of the experience! Explore art hubs, discover little known galleries and make a collage postcard to remember the day by. First we will enjoy 2 hours of art-going, seeing 5 exhibits in at least two different locations (example: see 3 galleries in a hub space then 2 more shows within walking distance of each other), collecting images and objects along the way and documenting things with a polaroid camera. In the 3rd hour we will go to an artist's studio, park or nearby cafe to create a collage reflection of the things we saw and felt on a 5x7 postcard (supplies provided). The crawl will include a variety of art mediums, such as photography, fibre arts, sculptural installation and new media works to give you a real overview of the Toronto art scene and the contemporary art exhibited in Toronto's many (there are hundreds of them!) small galleries. I'll animate your art experience with insights and answers about how things run, the meaning of the art and making collage!

I am an artist who makes my living facilitating arts workshops through art galleries, schools and community spaces. I have worked for, exhibited at and regularly attend many art galleries (a.k.a. artist-run-centres) in Toronto for almost 20 years. I am deeply rooted in the Toronto arts scene, living my life surrounded by other working artists and creative community members. I regularly make a day of checking out shows once or twice a month, and company always make the experience and discussions a lot more interesting! nevergalleryready.com, karendarricades.com
We will probably be in 1 of 5 general areas: Richmond and Spadina, Queen/King West Parkdale, Roncesvalles, The Junction, Annex (ish)/Bloorville. Every venue we will explore has about 1-3 degrees of separation from my professional life as an artist. Meaning I have exhibited my art work there, written art reviews about previous exhibits, taken or taught an arts workshop and/or have a relationship with the gallery staff and familiarity w/ the space.

This is about experiencing & making art, not buying it. Be prepared to see art not for sale. Contemporary art can seem strange and weird, we'll have fun talking about that in real ways, no art-speak!
